The Vincent Massey Vikings lost 41-0 to the Vincent Massey Trojans in their first game of the Winnipeg High School Football League season on Friday.
Vikings quarterback Charlie Gauthier went 3-for-11 through the air for a total of 37 passing yards and rushed five times for 35 yards on the ground.
Defensively, Mark Stevenson was a standout, making seven tackles, one assisted tackle, one sack and one forced fumble. Oakley Peters also had a strong game with seven tackles and one tackle for a loss.
“When you’re playing one of the top four teams in the province, it’s a what can we build on kind of theory,” said head coach Mike Steeves. “We try to keep the effort up, and we try to be a consistent team throughout. We always preach that if we’re an average team and we can be average for four quarters, we will be a great team at the end. As the game went on, we got a little better, we got a little more confident and we started to see some progress.”
Next week, the Vikings will look to bounce back at home against the Steinbach Sabres on Friday, Sept. 18.
