• 60 YEARS AGO — Martin Clinic beat Legion 9-5 in Pony and Colt league final action. Jack Engelbretson hit a home run and a single for the winners, and Alvin White, Dave Burman and Ted Grant each singled for Legion.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Terry Robertson stroked four singles in support of pitcher Mike Koltez as Sharpes defeated Brandon Chrysler 14-4 to win the Brandon Minor Baseball Association’s West End championship. Bill McLeod tripled for the winners.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Centre Dean Evason of Brandon and right winger Wayne Babych have signed multi-year NHL contracts with the Hartford Whalers.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Matthias Diechert scored five goals and Benno Looft added four as the German Royals beat Four-Way Taxi United 13-4 in the Brandon senior men’s soccer tournament. Max Bratzke scored three goals for the Royals, while Henning Romberg had the other. Renarde Giordeni scored three goals and Larry Furman had one for United.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Andrew Fisher helped the Neepawa Natives kick off the season in style on the weekend. Fisher fired three goals to lead the Natives to a 6-3 victory over the visiting Portage Terriers on the opening night of the 2006-07 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Taine Middleton burst a run for a 66-yard touchdown as the Neepawa Tigers edged the Virden Golden Bears 8-7 in a Rural Manitoba Football League game. Middleton finished the nine-man high school contest with 124 yards on 12 carries, while Dillan Neufeld added eight tackles for the Tigers (2-0).
