Easton Durgan rushed for 92 yards as the Crocus Plainsmen lost 21-16 to the host Steinbach Sabres in Winnipeg High School Football League Tier 1 action on Friday.
The Plainsmen had the ball with a chance to win in the last minute but couldn’t complete the winning drive.
“We were right there the whole way. Our offence played outstanding; we sustained long drives and there were a few times we weren’t able to put it in the end zone,” said head coach Mason Kaluzniak.
“We come out of that one feeling way better than we did coming out of Miles Mac.”
Jake Cory went 8-for-15 through the air with two touchdown passes to Will Cantelo.
Tucker Gobeil led the defence with two interceptions and three tackles. The Plainsmen credit offensive lineman Kolby McKay, the University of Manitoba Bisons commit, for helping ignite the run game, as well as defensive lineman Joey Cory, who stepped up to play on the O-line for part of the day.
“Kolby McKay, he’s so dominant on the O-line,” Kaluzniak said. “He just pushes guys around and pushes guys right off the field.”
The Plainsmen (0-3) host the Dakota Lancers (2-1) on Oct. 2 at 4:30 p.m.
The Vincent Massey Vikings (1-1) visit the St. Paul’s Crusaders (1-1) today at 1 p.m.
