BOYS
BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
The Wheat Kings (1-0-0) successfully opened their Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season against their traditional rival, the Winnipeg Wild (0-1-0), at Winnipeg’s Hockey For All Centre on Saturday in their lone action of the weekend.
On Saturday, Cooper Dryden made 28 saves and Owen Stanley, Daniel Flett-Neapew and Etienne Visser each scored in a 3-0 Brandon victory.
Brayden Watt had two assists.
Ardan Downey turned aside 27 shots for Winnipeg.
The Wheat Kings next see action when they host the Kenora Thistles on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
SOUTHWEST COUGARS
The Cougars (2-0-0) swept Kenora (0-1-1) at the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre.
On Sunday, Coleton Koop scored his second goal of the game 3:40 into overtime in a 6-5 Southwest win.
Gavin Anderson also scored twice, and Skyler Deacon and Jordan Knox sniped, with Knox’s goal coming with 16 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.
Dawson Smart made 25 saves for Southwest, with Maddox Boutette blocking 35 shots for Kenora.
On Saturday, Jaxson Cullen had two goals and an assist and Aubrey Cuvelier, Anderson, Knox and Koop also sniped in a 6-4 Southwest victory.
Koby Young had two goals for the Thistles in a game that saw both teams score shorthanded.
Liam Banga made 35 saves for Southwest, with Keanu Waasa’aanakwad blocking 32 shots for Kenora.
The Cougars remain on the road next weekend, visiting the Winnipeg Bruins at Southdale Community Centre on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., and the Eastman Selects at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The Chiefs (1-0-1) picked up three points against the Pembina Valley Hawks (1-1-0) at Morden’s Access Event Centre.
On Sunday, Mason Froese scored 2:30 into overtime in a 4-3 Hawks victory. Bryce Gambler and Wyatt Njegovan gave Yellowhead a 2-0 lead in the first period, but after Pembina Valley scored three goals in the middle frame, Colin Melnyk had to snipe late in regulation for the Chiefs to send it to overtime.
Landon McGregor made 43 saves for Yellowhead, with Carson O’Connor blocking 27 shots for Pembina Valley, including a penalty shot.
On Saturday, Duncan McLean had two goals and an assist and Ethan Turchinski, Sawyer Lepp, Lane McDonald and Melnyk also dented the twine in a 6-3 Yellowhead win.
Landon McGregor made 26 saves for Yellowhead, with Brody Peters blocking 29 shots for Pembina Valley.
The Chiefs are back out on the road next weekend, visiting the Interlake Lightning at Teulon-Rockwood Arena on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the Central Plains Capitals at Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place on Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
PARKLAND RANGERS
The Rangers (0-2-0) were swept by the Eastman Selects (2-0-0) at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place.
On Sunday, Brody Kaminski scored the first goal of the season for the Rangers but they were routed 13-1. Jevon Peters led the attack with two goals and five assists.
Jaxon Derlago and Benji Gardner combined to make 46 saves for Parkland, which dressed five affiliate players, with Rylan Peters blocking 19 shots for Eastman.
On Saturday, the Rangers dressed four affiliate players — and still only had 18 skaters and goalies — in a 6-0 loss.
Benji Gardner made 44 saves for Parkland, with Zaiden McDonald Horvath blocking just seven shots for Eastman for the shutout.
The Rangers, who open the season on a nine-game home stand, host Pembina Valley on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
GIRLS
WESTMAN WILDCATS
The Wildcats (1-0-0) opened the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA season with a shutout victory over the Pembina Valley Hawks on Saturday at Morden’s Access Event Centre.
Indigo Stone made 17 saves for the shutout and Ava Snyder, Georgia Koop, Lily Wells and Ivy Fry scored in a 4-0 victory. Madison Froese stopped 40 shots for the Hawks.
Next weekend, the Wildcats visit the Lightning at Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex on Saturday at 2:45 p.m.
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The Chiefs open their season against the Interlake Lightning at Shoal Lake Communiplex on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
