• 60 YEARS AGO — Fraser Clark and son John Clark won the father and son tournament held at Brandon Golf and Country Club, shooting an 84.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Jim McKinnon scored twice to lead Rapid City to a 2-1 victory over the host team in the final of the third annual George Fitton elementary school soccer tourney.
• 40 YEARS AGO — In YBC bowling’s Bring a Buddy tournament, bantam boys winners were Michael Elliott and Chad Smith with a +144.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Tory Blandford and James Lenton both scored twice to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 7-2 triumph over the Yellowhead Chiefs in the opening game of the Southwest Cougars’ pre-season midget AAA hockey tournament. Geoff Gregoire, Darby Cochrane and Ryan McLean also scored for the Wheat Kings.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Souris native Chris Falloon has been named the Canada West university hockey player of the week. The 23-year-old alternate captain with the Manitoba Bisons fired four goals and an assist in a weekend exhibition series split with the CIS national finalist Lakehead Thunderwolves.
• 10 YEARS AGO — After spending a summer away from the rink and helping coach some local teams this fall, Tyson Verhelst has decided to return to hockey. The 19-year-old Brandonite, who was the starting goalie for the Western Hockey League’s Spokane Chiefs last season, decided to retire from the game during the off-season due to concussion issues. He relaxed more this summer, opted not to report to the Chiefs’ camp and was an assistant coach with the Brandon Bantam AAA Wheat Kings. Then he had second thoughts and asked for a trade. One was granted and Verhelst will report to the Red Deer Rebels today.
