BOYS
BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
The Wheat Kings (3-0-0) swept the visiting Kenora Thistles (0-3-1) in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend as they opened their home schedule at J&G Homes Arena.
On Sunday, Brandon’s Brayden Watt had two goals and two assists, with singles coming from Etienne Visser, Eric Berger, Crew Elder, Jake Beaty, Ty Aldcroft and Nash Lenton in an 8-2 rout.
Aurick Veldhuisen made 12 saves for Brandon, with Keanu Waasa’aanakwad and Maddox Boutette combining to stop 31 shots for Kenora.
On Saturday, Hunter Ethelston scored twice and Brandon also received singles from Berger, Graycen Van Meijl, Grayson Rome and Carson Fowler in a 6-1 victory.
Watt, Ashton Shields and Rome all had a pair of helpers.
Cooper Dryden made 14 saves for Brandon, with Waasa’aanakwad blocking 32 shots for Kenora.
The Wheat Kings play just once this week, visiting Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place to meet the Central Plains Capitals on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
SOUTHWEST COUGARS
The Cougars (2-1-1) dropped road games against the Winnipeg Bruins (3-0-0) and the Eastman Selects (3-0-0).
On Sunday at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre, Ryder Olford had four goals and two assists in a 13-1 Eastman rout; They scored nine times in a 13-minute span in the third period.
Gavin Anderson had the lone Cougars goal.
Southwest’s Dawson Smart and Eastman’s Zaiden McDonald Horvath both made 18 saves.
On Saturday at Southdale Community Centre, Gavin Anderson gave the Cougars an early lead but the Bruins exploded for three goals in five minutes near the end of the period in a 7-4 Bruins win.
Jaxson Cullen, Liam Magwood and Denzel Monias also scored for Southwest.
Liam Banga made 34 saves for Southwest, with Zachary Houtkooper blocking 30 shots for Winnipeg.
The Cougars head north to Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena to square off against the Norman Northstars on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The Chiefs (2-1-1) headed out on the road for games against the Interlake Lightning (1-0-0) and the Central Plains Capitals (1-3-0).
On Sunday at Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place, Darby Wilson stopped all 22 shots he faced and Bentley Goulden, Grady McNish, Burke Dunits, Wyatt Njegovan and Sawyer Lepp scored in a 5-0 Chiefs victory over the Capitals.
Riley Foster turned aside 38 shots for Central Plains.
On Saturday at Teulon-Rockwood Arena, Bryce Gambler and Carter White scored 63 seconds apart early in the third period to give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead. The Lightning tied it just over a minute later and Interlake’s Beckham Broesky sniped with less than there minutes left to give the hosts a 3-2 victory.
Darby Wilson made 36 saves for Yellowhead, with Sawyer Henkelman blocking 34 shots for Interlake.
In their sole action this week, the Chiefs host the Winnipeg Bruins on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
PARKLAND RANGERS
The Rangers (0-4-0) were swept by the Pembina Valley Hawks (3-1-0) at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place.
On Sunday, Rhett Legaarden had the lone Rangers highlight with a goal in a 9-1 loss.
Connor Thorn made 37 saves for Parkland, with Brody Peters blocking 19 shots for Pembina Valley.
On Saturday, Parkland’s Brody Kaminski and Rhett Legaarden scored late in the first period to tie the game 2-2, but Pembina Valley scored the final five goals for a 7-2 victory.
Thorn made 29 saves for Parkland — including a penalty shot — with Carson O’Connor blocking 26 shots for Pembina Valley.
The Rangers continue their season-opening nine-game home stand when the Winnipeg Bruins visit on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the Interlake Lightning skate against them on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
GIRLS
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The Chiefs (1-0-0) opened with a win against the Interlake Lightning (0-3-0) in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.
On Friday at Shoal Lake Communiplex, Khloe Brown, Paige Thompson and Callee Despiegelaere scored in a 3-1 victory.
Gracie Johnston made 17 saves for Yellowhead, with Emma Cassils stopping 34 shots for Interlake
The Chiefs return to the ice during their season-opening six-game home stand against the Eastman Selects on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m., and the Winnipeg Avros on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
WESTMAN WILDCATS
The Wildcats (2-0-0) visited Interlake in their sole action, and posted their second shutout of the young season.
On Saturday at Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex, Alana Champagne made 20 saves for Westman and Londyn Hrubeniuk and Kasia Baranyk scored in a 2-0 Wildcats victory. Joslyn Tetlock stopped 36 shots for Interlake.
They beat Pembina Valley 4-0 in their season opener.
The Wildcats next see action at Portage la Prairie’s BDO Centre for the Community when they meet the Central Plains Capitals on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
