Hollie Brugger hammered home 10 kills as the Vincent Massey Vikings secured a spot in the quarterfinals at the Viking Classic varsity girls volleyball tournament on a rowdy Friday afternoon at Massey.
The Vikings swept the Stonewall Rams 25-18, 25-21 to improve to 2-0 after Ella VanDaele had a five-kill, four-ace match in a 25-14, 25-18 sweep of Regina’s Luther Lions.
Massey lost its last match of the day 25-15, 22-25, 15-13 to Jeanne-Sauve as Hannah McGregor recorded six kills for the Vikings.
Massey faces St. Mary’s in the quarterfinals today.
The Neelin Spartans girls went 3-0 in Pool B.
Neelin swept Elton 25-15, 25-10, and won narrow third sets over Westgate 15-11 and Selkirk 24-22.
Elli Pomehichuk led the team with 24 kills and four blocks on the day, while Jayda Davidson chipped in eight kills and five blocks and Evelyn Stitt posted eight kills and seven blocks.
Josée Martine served nine aces.
Neelin faces Warren in the quarterfinals today.
The Crocus Plainsmen girls went 0-3 in Pool D, starting with a 2-0 loss to Virden. Brylie Waldner recorded three kills and five digs in the match.
Crocus lost a hard-fought three-setter to Sheldon Williams Collegiate of Saskatchewan with a 15-10 third set.
Mary Williams notched six kills and nine digs while Courtney Giesbrecht added five kills.
The Plainsmen fell 2-0 to the St. Mary’s Flames to close the day and head to the consolation side.
The girls’ final is at Massey at 4:30 p.m.
On the boys’ side, the Vikings rode strong passing to a near-perfect day, dropping just one set to the Neelin Spartans in five matches.
Massey swept Daniel McIntyre 25-14, 25-18; swept Crocus 25-6, 25-19; swept LeBoldus (Regina) 25-17, 25-20; swept Luther (Regina) 25-7, 25-17; and split Neelin 18-25, 25-23.
They continue pool play this morning and have secured a spot in the semifinals.
Neelin swept Elton 25-18, 25-20; swept DMCI 25-15, 25-14; swept LeBoldus 25-18, 25-12; and swept Luther 25-13, 25-10.
Crocus lost to Elton 25-12, 25-22; split DMCI 25-27, 25-22; split LeBoldus 25-15, 20-25; and beat Luther 25-16, 25-17.
The Spartans and Plainsmen meet this morning, with Crocus likely needing a victory to reach the top four of seven.
The boys’ final is today at Massey at 3:30 p.m.
