TORONTO –
Davis Schneider scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to lift the Toronto Blue Jays to a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday to end their six-game losing streak.
Schneider reached on a walk and advanced to third base on an Andres Gimenez single.
Gimenez stole second and when shortstop Miguel Rojas couldn’t corral Will Smith’s low throw, Schneider scampered home to the delight of the matinee crowd of 37,766.
Jeff Hoffman survived a nervy ninth inning for his second save. The loss ended the Dodgers’ five-game winning streak.
Los Angeles starter Shohei Ohtani allowed four hits and an unearned run over six innings.
Toronto starter Dylan Cease was pulled in the sixth after loading the bases. Louis Varland gave up a sacrifice fly to Teoscar Hernandez that brought home Smith to make it 2-1.
Los Angeles (9-3) added another run in the seventh inning before Toronto (5-7) tied it with two runs in the bottom half. George Springer and Daulton Varsho drove in one run apiece.
Toronto outhit Los Angeles 8-6.
TAKEAWAYS
Blue Jays: Mistakes proved costly at times. Third baseman Kazuma Okamoto’s throwing error in the fourth inning led to an unearned run. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. led off the sixth with a double but was easily thrown out at third base after Sanchez hit a sharp grounder to Rojas.
Dodgers: There was some uneven relief work once Ohtani’s pitching appearance ended. Jack Dreyer gave up three hits and a walk in the seventh as Toronto pulled even. Blake Treinen walked Guerrero to load the bases before recording the next two outs to keep the game tied.
KEY MOMENT
Springer’s RBI double in the seventh came a few feet short of a home run, but still gave the Blue Jays some life.
KEY STAT
Springer used the ABS challenge on Ohtani’s first pitch of the game. The strike call was changed to a ball after a review found it was nearly two inches low.
COMING UP
The Blue Jays get a day off before a home game against the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. The Dodgers will return home to kick off a series on Friday against the Texas Rangers.
