WINKLER — William Lyburn may have played his last game at the Viterra Championship.
Shortly after being eliminated from men’s curling provincials following an 8-5 loss to Brandon’s Steve Irwin on Friday in Winkler, the 42-year-old skip who is originally from Scotland but lived in the Wheat City for several years, admitted he is considering retirement.
“For sure, it’s definitely sitting in my mind right now just because it’s just too much to do with work and family and the kids’ curling time and it’s really difficult,” Lyburn said. “It’s been a long couple of years the last two or three years and we gave it our all and things do change.
“I’m not going to say no but I’m considering taking some time next year possibly not playing, but still throwing rocks and working with my kid’s junior team and I’ll probably play a spiel or two with somebody that needs a spare.”
However, he did say if the right situation arises he would consider his options.
Lyburn’s team, which played at the pre-Olympic Trials in Summerside, P.E.I., in November, will be dispersing with second Jared Kolomaya soon off to Kamloops, B.C.
Despite failing to qualify for the playoff round at the Viterra, he said it’s been a fun ride with his team.
“At the end of the day we had a pretty good run,” Lyburn said. “We got in the top 11, top 12 in Canada and we got to China last year and got to wear the Canadian Maple Leaf and that was a cool experience for us.”
