The third set in Tuesday’s Brandon High School Volleyball League varsity boys’ match looked like it might not end for a while.
Then, with the host Vincent Massey Vikings up 27-26, setter Jarrett Mabon jumped up and instead of setting the ball to a teammate, pounded it into the ground to give the Vikings a 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 28-26) win over the Neelin Spartans.
Liam Nohr had 24 kills and four stuff blocks, while Brock Carmichael added 20 kills and dug up seven ball to help Massey improve to 2-1. The Vikings hold the head-to-head set tiebreaker with the Spartans, who won the season opener in four sets.
Lucas Vasconcelos posted eight kills and two stuff blocks for Neelin (2-1), which was without an injured Dayton Black. Riley Paul added 12 kills and four stuff blocks.
In varsity girls’ play, setter Cassie Bartley had 28 assists, three kills, two aces and a block to lead the host Vikings to a 3-1 (23-25, 25-11, 25-19, 25-17) victory over the Spartans.
Kalyn Tokaryk added 13 kills for Massey (3-1), which holds the head-to-head set tiebreaker with Neelin (3-1). The Spartans won their first meeting in five sets. James DeGroot added 12 kills and four aces for the home side.
Marly Pellerin posted 11 kills for Neelin, with Katie Shields adding six and Kelsey Mclennan chipping in with three.
In Virden, the Golden Bears swept the Crocus Plainsmen 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-15) in the other varsity girls contest.
MacKenzie Chapman had six aces and Rayna Schwalm had four, with Megan Nachachewski adding three kills for Virden (2-2).
Sarah Curtis and Jordanna Chartrand each had two aces for Crocus (0-4), with Rachael Donald and Brooke Derksen adding two kills apiece.
