Cameron Trimble grew up watching the Neepawa Natives, and now he has the opportunity pull on their sweater this fall.

The 18-year-old from Gladstone would attend Naitves games with his grandfather when he was a kid, and his grandfather told him he could play with the team one day. He made that dream a reality by putting pen to paper with the Manitoba Junior Hockey League club.

“It’s pretty special,” Trimble said in a phone interview Thursday.

It’s a dream that might not have been realized as the Waywayseecappo Wolverines initially held Trimble’s rights, but Natives head coach and general manager Ken Pearson traded for them this season.

“We first met the MJ prospect camp in July and I think we hit off,” Trimble said. “He said I liked the way I played and three months later he traded for me.”

Trimble is coming off an impressive year with the Central Plains Capitals of the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League. This past season, the five-foot-10 forward racked up a league-best 48 assists, along with 20 goals for 68 points in 44 games. He notched two goals in three playoff games before the Winnipeg Wild swept the Caps in their best-of-five quarterfinal series.

In 133 career games at the U18 level, Trimble eclipsed a point-per-game pace, recording 146. Trimble said he can play all over the depth chart when he’s needed.

“This year I was the scoring guy, but other years I’ve been an energy player, a role guy,” he said.

No matter what role Trimble plays, he knows how to contribute offensively.

“Cameron brings compete, passion, and skill to our forward group,” Pearson said in a news release. “We are very happy that he has chosen to play in Neepawa.”

Trimble, who tries to model his game after NHLers Artemi Panarin and Johnny Gaudreau said the biggest thing that improved over his time in Portage la Prairie was his foot speed.

“Not being as physically dominant as other players is something I’ll have to make up for in my speed,” he said.

Overall, he enjoyed his time with Central Plains, after not making AAA his first year of bantam, he pushed himself to get better every year.

“It was great, I loved playing there,” he said.

This summer, whether gyms eventually open or not, Trimble plans to add some weight to his frame.

“Hitting the gym more, taking it more seriously,” he said. “Trying to get that physical side of me, to get more compete there.”

Trimble will be joining a young, rebuilding Natives team that already announced the signing of Southwest Cougar forward Cody Gudnason earlier this week.

“That’s the exciting part,” Trimble said. “Hopefully I can be a part of something that gets this team back on track and hopefully make a playoff appearance.”
