Virden Oil Capitals forward Carson Buydens has been nominated for the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s top rookie award.
The 18-year-old from Gladstone earned the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s rookie of the year honours after recording 53 points in 54 games this season.
Buydens — who has committed to the NCAA’s Princeton Tigers — also had five points in 10 games during the playoffs.
It was a big Tuesday for Buydens as he was selected eighth overall in the United States Hockey League entry draft by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
His teammates and MJHL MVP Braden Fischer was also picked by the RoughRiders in the seventh round.
Dauphin Kings defenceman Jayden Jubenvill of Gilbert Plains was a third-round choice by the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
