After finding his scoring touch last month, Southwest Cougars forward Tyson Draper earned the monthly Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League award.
The forward had points in eight of his 10 games, scoring seven goals and finishing January with 15 points, nearly doubling his point total on the year.
Moreover, for playing hard-nosed, physical game, the rookie only accumulated two penalty minutes in January.
Playing for the U17 Ice Bandits last season, Draper immediately stepped into a top-six role, finding early chemistry with his linemates. He currently leads the Cougars in power-play goals with seven.
His strong play this season also has him listed with the Western Hockey League’s Saskatoon Blades.
He is a prospect of his hometown Virden Oil Capitals in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, where, Draper made his debut in December, scoring his first MJHL goal.
Lane Apperley of the Pembina Valley Hawks was named the league’s defenceman of the month after he contributed seven points in the Hawks nine games – including two two-point games.
In addition, the sophomore D-man logged heavy minutes in key defensive situations last month during a heavy and tough schedule for the Hawks. Lane is a prospect of the Niverville Nighthawks.
The first-place Brandon Wheat Kings are on a roll offensively, but key to the team’s success also comes from the crease. Rookie Matthew Michta was named goaltender of the month as he leads most league goaltending statistics.
The 16-year-old goalie appeared in five games last month, winning all five tilts while posting a .931 save percentage and a goals-against-average (GAA) of just 1.40. He also earned two shutouts.
His play in January helped his team to a 11-0 record. A prospect of the Swan Valley Stampeders of the MJHL (drafted 81st overall), Michta has earned wins in all of his 17 starts this season which puts him first in the league in the wins category. He also leads the league in save percentage (.930) and GAA (1.71).
