Brandon University didn’t have to go far in its search for an athletic director.

Russ Paddock, coach of the CIS men’s volleyball runner-up Bobcats this past season, has added the job of interim athletic director to his BU duties.

"Certainly, I’m interested in some of the duties of that position," Paddock said Thurs-day night after the school announced he would succeed the departed Kirk De Fazio.

"Just the timing, with Kirk’s departure, it was a good oppor-tunity to get some experience in that job and perhaps (enable) a better transition for us in the short-term."

Paddock’s appointment is for a one-year term. The school plans to begin its search for a full-time athletic director in January 2012.

"Having been at Brandon (University) for six years now and seeing two athletic directors come and go, I feel I’m fairly knowledgeable in the area, and with the other coaches and staff that we have, it’ll be a good environment for next year," Paddock said.

"At this point in time, it’s working on what’s best for the program for the coming year."

Paddock, a father of two who turns 45 in August, will continue to coach the men’s volleyball team.

The former Olympian has led the Bobcats to two appearances in the national championship, including a third-place finish in 2009.

"We’re really excited to have Russ in this role," BU vice-president of administration and finance Scott Lamont said in a news release. "He brings significant experience in both the university and the league, so it should be a seamless transition."

De Fazio resigned last month to take a job with Special Olympics Alberta.
