Beloved by many of the Manitoba Senior Baseball League players who call it home, Andrews Field has a shot to be named Canada’s Favourite Ballpark.

The 24-year-old park, home of the MSBL’s Cloverleafs and Montana’s Marlins, is one of 13 remaining diamonds in contention for the honour in a Baseball Canada contest.

Andrews Field is competing with parks from Etobicoke, Ont., Peace River, Alta., and Thunder Bay Ont., this week on Baseball Canada’s website (baseball.ca). The park that gets the most online votes will advance to the semifinals. A baseball field from Okotoks, Alta., was the first to advance in voting last week, with two other first-round votes yet to come.

There is nothing up for grabs except pride, something that those who maintain Andrews Field have in spades.

"For us, it’s kind of a pride thing, we enjoy looking after it and making it look good," said Marlins general manager Nate Andrews of the field that bears the name of his late father, Neil.

The former Westbran Stadium was renamed in honour of Neil Andrews in 2007, a change that was accompanied by a major fundraising and renovation project, and the young Andrews said you’d be hard-pressed to find a better playing surface in any amateur ballpark across the country.

"From our point, visiting nationals five different times and being at youth tournaments and different things, I know for sure that our facility is the nicest diamond that we’ve played on so far," he said.

This round of voting ends on Monday at 9 a.m.
