The Brandon Barbarians Division 1 men’s rugby team’s confidence grew by leaps and bounds Saturday, just in time for the playoffs.

Chase Fiegal scored a try right before the final whistle sounded in Minnedosa to give the Barbarians a 15-12 win over the University of Manitoba.

“There’s nothing sweeter than that,” said Shawn Sarkonak, the Barbarians’ president.

“It was one of the most exciting games I’ve played in this year and if you talk to anyone watching it, they would say it was entertaining, back and forth and hard-hitting and it definitely looked like a final.”

The Barbarians were previously winless against the U of M this season, and the win not only gave them a win over the league’s best team, but it also guaranteed them second place in the standings and home-field advantage in their semifinal.

Brandon is scheduled to host the Highlanders, but a date and time have yet to be determined.

After a win like that, Sarkonak said the Barbarians must make sure they don’t look past their semifinal opponents next week.

“They have a strong back line and guys who can move the ball and run it as well,” he said.

“If we can come out and play the way we did yesterday, come out firing on all cylinders, it will be a really good game and I have the confidence we can come out with a victory.”

The Division 2 Barbarians defeated the University of Manitoba 29-10, but they failed to clinch a home playoff game.

They finished the season tied with Sturgeon Creek for second place with 53 points, but they lost the season series based on points for and against.

Tyler Jury, Michael Birch, Scott Thompson, Paul Grosskopf and Liam Hammersley scored tries for the Division 2 club.

Dates, times and locations weren’t finalized for the semifinal as of press time.

The women’s team defeated the U of M 122-0 on Saturday and finished in first place.

Their semifinal is up in the air as their opponent has withdrawn from the playoffs and the Barbarians are trying to determine if the fifth-place Brumbies will come to Brandon to play in the semifinal instead.
