Jay Klym drove in one run and scored twice as the Minnedosa Mavericks topped the Carberry Royals 10-1 to open the best-of-five Santa Clara Baseball League final Wednesday night.
Klym hit a pair of doubles, while Mike Tarleton went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the host Mavericks.
John Hutton picked up the win for Minnedosa after holding the Royals to one run on four hits, while striking out 11 in seven innings. Michael Mitchell was tagged with the loss after surrendering 10 runs on 12 hits in six innings.
Eric Kuharski walked three times and scored for the Royals, who will host Game 2 Monday at 6:30 p.m.
