The Neelin Spartans made Canad Inns Stadium their own on Thursday.
Neelin earned its fifth shutout of the Winnipeg High School Football League season — and the first one away from home — as it disposed of the Daniel McIntyre Maroons 53-0 in an Andy Currie Division quarter-final. Brock Hiltner led the way on defence with eight tackles and three assists, while Quinton Hunter added eight tackles of his own. Chance Miller returned an interception 96 yards for a touchdown.
“I am very pleased with the way our defence played,” Spartans head coach Robert Cullen said. “They stymied Daniel Mac’s running game, which they had two great running backs, and we’re just happy to be here and ready to go to the next level.”
Osian Edwards rushed the ball three times for 132 yards and scored on all three plays. Dylan Minshull finished with 197 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
Bryce Keilbach was 2-for-3 passing for 16 yards. He also rushed for 41 yards and a touchdown. Miller caught both passes and ran for 13 yards and a touchdown.
Meanwhile at the East Side Eagles field in Winnipeg, Michael Bright took an Evan Didychuk pass 62 yards for a touchdown on Vincent Massey’s first offensive play in its Kas Vidruk Division quarter-final. The Vikings went on to a 15-0 victory over the Kildonan East Reivers.
The play design came to head coach Mike Steeves in the tub the night before the game and he said it just set the tone for the rest of the contest.
“It was a great way to start a game,” he said. “This is the most focused I’ve seen our coaching staff and our players. It was really a great test and I think we really stepped up to it.”
Didychuk scored Massey’s other touchdown on a one-yard plunge. Jamil Tahhan kicked two converts and a single point on a kickoff.
James Johnston ran 23 times for 128 yards and Jesse Smith added 29 more yards on the ground. Ty Kuz led Massey’s defence with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery and Nathan Unger chipped in with nine tackles. Brayden Albrecht added six tackles, one sack and recovered one fumble.
