Former Brandonite Nolan Thiessen and his team from Alberta are off to a sensational start to the curling season.

In a year in which every competitive team is doing everything it can to earn enough Canadian Team Ranking System points to secure a coveted spot at next year’s Roar of the Rings Olympic qualifier or the pre-qualifying tournament, Thiessen’s team — skipped by Kevin Koe — has been king. The Koe foursome leads everyone with $85,200 in winnings — claiming three World Curling Tour titles this season, including the first Grand Slam of Curling event last weekend.

All that success has launched Koe to the top of the CTRS standings as well, with 188.195 points. If the squad can hang onto their lead — which means they will likely have to win Alberta and do well at this year’s Brier — it will secure a spot at the Roar in Winnipeg. However, Koe could also take care of that by winning next week’s Canada Cup of Curling.

Both Koe and former Brandonite Mike McEwen, who chose to ease into this season, have already secured spots at the pre-trials, but both would love to avoid them and go straight to Winnipeg.

Despite not entering as many events early on as last season, McEwen’s Winnipeg-based squad is off to a good start, sitting fourth on the WCT money list with $38,500 in winnings. Edmonton’s Kevin Martin is second at $49,000 and Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton is third at $47,400. McEwen is also fifth on the CTRS rankings with 101.880 points.

One team not having a great season so far is Brandon’s Rob Fowler. The Fowler foursome — which includes Allan Lyburn, Richard Daneault and Derek Samagalski — has only made the playoffs in one of the six WCT events they have played in this season and they have won only $6,500, the same amount earned by Brandon’s Terry McNamee.

Fowler, who put himself in a good position to earn a pre-trials spot last season by finishing eighth in CTRS points, is sitting 27th at 26 points and needs an impressive rest of the season to earn a spot, based on 2011-13 point aggregate.

MCT: Brandon’s Scott Ramsay and Dauphin’s Greg Todoruk are both in the men’s Dekalb Superspiel at Morris from today through Sunday, along with former Brandonite William Lyburn. The event has a $32,000 purse. Tina Kozak’s Carberry squad is the only Westman squad in the women’s side of the draw, which has a $24,000 purse.

STURLING: Anyone interested in trying sturling is invited to attend an instructional open house at the Brandon Curling Club on Monday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sturling is a two-person game where one player holds a broom and the other player throws all six rocks during an end. The players switch roles each end and play a total of six ends. There is minimal to no sweeping.

There’s no charge for the open house and brooms and sliders are available at the club. For more information, call Brian Johnston at 204-571-6962.

LOTTERIES: The Manitoba Lotteries Fall Classic, a WCT and MCT event scheduled for Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 at the Brandon Curling Club, is still looking for more entries. There are 14 teams confirmed for the event, but 15 are needed for WCT and CTRS points to be awarded. Any interested foursomes should contact Derek Papagenies as quickly as possible at 204-720-7669.

RIVERVIEW: Duane Lang’s foursome won the Riverview Curling Club’s men’s bonspiel on the weekend, while Brenda Linski won the women’s championship.

EXTRA ENDS: Shoal Lake will host a masters cash bonspiel from today through Sunday … Junior and senior regional playdowns will be running next week. The Westman senior men’s will be held in Carberry from Nov. 29 to Dec. 2, with the women’s also running in Carberry but starting one day later. Both the junior men’s and women’s are set for Minnedosa from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 … Wawanesa is hosting a bonspiel from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. For more information, contact Trent Cullen at 204-824-2638 … A one-day youth mixed bonspiel is set for Dec. 1 at the Neepawa Curling Club. Registration fee is $40.
