STONEWALL — Janelle Schwindt has had an incredibly busy season.
The 20-year-old Brandonite has been on the ice practising and playing in bonspiels with both her women’s and junior teams. It meant a lot of nights at the Brandon Curling Club and on the road for the Brandon University student, but it has resulted in appearances at a pair of provincial championships.
Schwindt didn’t fare well as a skip at the junior provincials in Brandon — posting a 1-6 record — and her women’s team, which she plays second for, isn’t doing much better with a 2-4 record through the first three days at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Stonewall.
Despite losing records in both events, Schwindt feels she’s learned a lot, especially playing at her first Scotties.
“It’s pretty overwhelming with the great competition out there,” Schwindt said. “It’s like you miss a shot by an inch and that’s a full-out missed shot. The next thing you know you’re giving up three. It’s a little bit more intense than juniors, but I love it.”
When Stacey Fordyce asked her to join her team with Kelsey Russill and Roslynn Ripley, she didn’t expect Schwindt to have such a busy winter. Fordyce wasn’t aware Schwindt still had one year of junior eligibility left, but both sides agreed to play together anyway.
Schwindt decided to make Fordyce’s squad her main priority, leaving her junior team in the hands of her third Kylee Calvert for the few occasions when both of her teams were competing at different events.
She also had to switch from a skip’s mindset to being a second. The adjustment period has gone well and Fordyce is impressed with Schwindt’s play as a second and her dedication to the team.
“She’s a great sweeper,” Fordyce said. “She brings a lot to that because when the front end does come down, she has a lot of insight. At the same time, she does back off because we are a little bit older than her, but it’s nice to have the skipping and that in her, too. She knows the game well.”
Schwindt admitted it was pretty hard to play on two different competitive teams this season, but she feels she made the right decision to focus mainly on the Fordyce squad.
She also feels she’s gained a lot from playing this week, especially what it takes to get to the next level and what it’s like to curl on arena ice.
She also likes the way Fordyce’s team has developed this season and thinks they have a bright future together.
“We’re really coming together and this will help us out more. Every game we get closer,” she said.
