This will be one of the most exciting and longest curling seasons for Brandonites Lois Fowler and Maureen Bonar.

The pair, along with Cathy Gauthier and Allyson Stewart, won the Canadian senior women’s championship last year to earn a berth in the 2015 world seniors. However, the event will be held in Sochi, Russia in April, which has Fowler looking at breaking the year into different sections.

“It’s so far away in April and curling is over by mid-March usually,” Fowler said. “We’ll do quite a bit of curling in the fall and I’m going to be away for the month of January. Then we’ll go out at it hard again in February, March and first part of April.”

Fowler and her teammates have created a much busier schedule this season to prepare for the worlds. They will compete in a few Manitoba Curling Tour events and plan to enter the Scotties Tournament of Hearts regional playdowns. If they advance to the provincial women’s championship in Winkler from Jan. 21-25, then Fowler will return from her vacation to curl with her team.

As usual, Fowler will also skip a team in the Stream ‘N’ Wood Curlettes women’s league, which runs Wednesday mornings at the Brandon Curling Club, starting Oct. 22. Bonar will be her third, but they will have a different front end. Sharon Shannon and Jill Hazelwood will fill in for Gauthier and Stewart, who don’t live in Westman.

Fowler won the Curlettes title last year with Bonar, Hazelwood and Terry Ursel, and views it as one more competitive game per week.

While this season will be busier with more travel, Fowler feels the schedule will be worth it and will have the team prepared for Sochi.

“The fact that I’m not here in January, it gives us some weekends together,” she said. “I don’t know what we’ll do after senior provincials in February, but we’ll find ’spiels in February and March to hone our skills before we head off to Russia.”

While there’s so much to look forward to this season, Fowler doesn’t think she’ll run out of patience. She knows her team has a lot to do before they go to the worlds and she’s just enjoying being back on the ice.

“I’ve had a couple of games this week and practised,” she said. “It feels great.”
