For Tori Adriaansen, the appeal of trapshooting can be found everywhere at competitions.

“It’s the excitement of it, I guess,” she said. “The trap community is really great. Everyone here is really nice and really friendly and always cheer you on, even when you’re competing against them. And improving all the time makes you want to keep doing it more.”

The 16-year-old, who is currently competing in the Canadian Trapshooting Championships at the Brandon Gun Club, is in her second year in the sport.

She comes by her love for trapshooting honestly. Adriaansen’s father Paul has been a top competitive shooter for years.

The family had a trap on their farm north of Carberry, near Wellwood, but when Tori was born Paul stopped shooting there as the family got busier.

“Last year he got me into it and then I got him to bring the trap home and set it up again,” she said. “That’s when I really got into it.”

She competes in singles and handicap but feels she isn’t ready for doubles yet

In singles, the shooter stands 16 yards from the trap and a single target comes out. In doubles, the shooter stands the same distance but two targets come out.

In handicap, the shooters move farther away from the target based on their handicap.

“It’s hard starting out but I’ve been improving,” she said. “It depends on the weather, really. You have to learn in each weather setting, like when it’s really windy you have to learn to shoot in the wind. I haven’t quite got that down but other than that it’s pretty good.”

Brandon Gun Club president Pat Lamont said that about a quarter of the group’s 25 junior shooters are female. He’s impressed by the strides that Tori has made in her short time in the sport.

“You can definitely see progress,” Lamont said. “She was part of our junior program and took the instruction and has really taken off.”

Adriaansen has the opportunity to participate in a handful of organized shoots each summer. She is currently fourth among the juniors at the championships.

While she takes pride in her results, it’s not all that matters for her.

“You’re competing but it’s not like a competition,” Adriaansen said. “You know it is but you’re always focused on yourself, more so than everyone else.”
