“Keep calm, it’s just the Olympics.”

Those words were etched on the bottom of one of many signs friends and teammates of Brandon Eagles gymnast Isabela Onyshko pinned on the north wall of the club as they cheered her on during the women’s artistic gymnastics qualifying round Sunday evening.

The support for Onyshko, Brandon’s first Olympian in 24 years, was boisterous at the private viewing party as people of all ages were glued to livestream of her performance in Rio de Janeiro. Onyshko’s father Dan, and siblings Stevie and Catarina were among those at the club looking on wide-eyed. Onyshko’s mother, Paula Moreira, was watching her perform in person.

“I’m just so happy for her,” Dan said . “It’s something she’s dreamed of for a long time and it’s wonderful to see.”

Although the livestream at the club cut out, Onyshko’s Olympic dream will continue.

After posting scores of 14.533 on the balance beam, 13.966 in her floor routine and 14.000 on the vault, she turned in a 14.733 on the uneven bars and finished 10th, qualifying for the individual all-around final. Her 10th-place beam score also pushed her into the final of that apparatus.

The all-around final will take place Thursday and the beam final on Aug. 15.

However, Canada failed to qualify for the all-around team final, coming up ninth and 0.168 points shy of the eighth-place Dutch.

It’s been a long journey for Onyshko to get to the Summer Games, but her father is so proud of her.

“It’s not very common that people find their true passion in life and you’re lucky when you do,” Dan said. “She found her passion. She found what it is that gets her going and that’s what’s taken her where she is.”

Meanwhile, in women’s basketball, Canada, which has former Brandon University Bobcat coaches Shawnee Harle and Steve Baur on its coaching staff, opened round-robin play with a 90-68 win over China on Saturday. The Canadians return to the court today against Serbia.
