Quinn Skrupa wasn’t expecting to jet off to Italy but she wasn’t going to say no to flying across the Atlantic Ocean.
The 15-year-old Brandon Eagles gymnast was in Quebec at last month’s L’International Gymnix competition when her mom called.
“I was in Montreal competing and my mom phoned me and said, ‘We have to decide by tomorrow if you’re going to Italy for a competition.’” Skrupa recalled before leaving for Italy on Monday. “And I was like: ‘What?’ That’s how I ended up going.”
Italy has always been a bucket-list destination for the four-foot-10 Vincent Massey student. She has already spent a day Venice sine arriving in Italy, which included a trip aboard a gondola, touring the city’s intricate canal network and visiting a variety of unique shops.
On Saturday and Sunday, however, she will be back on gymnastics apparatuses when she competes in the junior division of the annual City of Jesolo Trophy event.
Although Skrupa is coming off a left elbow injury she sustained in training prior to her trip to Montreal, she has set lofty expectations for herself in the Italian city, which is located on the north coast of the Adriatic Sea.
At Gymnix, she was 12th on the uneven bars (12.467 points), 18th on the vault (13.334), tied for 18th on the balance beam (11.400), 21st on the floor (12.034) and 17th in the all-around Junior Cup division (49.235).
“I didn’t train heading into Gymnix … and I didn’t really train before I competed,” Skrupa said. “I had a week off because the physio said I had to take it off and then I basically went out and ended up doing really well.”
She’s optimistic better results will follow in Italy and eyes qualifying for the floor, beam and all-around finals.
In order to push her points up higher, Skrupa has altered a couple of her routines. She is taking the biggest risk on her beam routine by adding dance combinations.
“I was doing a front aerial, side aerial split jump and now I’m switching it all up to get more bonus points and to make it look cleaner,” Skrupa said.
She also hopes the little things like having her toes pointed and legs straighter during her routines will result in better execution and higher point totals.
With Eagles coaches Lorie Henderson and Joe Stouffer away, former Olympian Kyna Fletcher has travelled to Europe to serve as Skrupa’s coach.
Fletcher lives in Vancouver and choreographs Skrupa’s floor routine, and the teenager is very much looking forward to having Fletcher with her.
And Skrupa hopes this weekend’s event is a springboard heading into the Canadian artistic gymnastics championships being held in Waterloo, Ont., from May 22 to 27.
