IN LOCAL HISTORY

• 50 YEARS AGO — Hamiota scored six goals in the third period to earn a 7-7 tie with the Brandon Midgets in a Turtle Mountain Juvenile Hockey League game. John Paddock fired three goals for Hamiota, Brandon got two goals from Guy Bieber and Don Affleck.

• 40 YEARS AGO — Sean Farnell, with just four points at the end of regulation time, exploded for 11 in a three-minute overtime period to give the Vincent Massey Vikings junior varsity boys a 75-68 exhibition basketball victory over the varsity team from Princess Elizabeth in Shilo.

• 30 YEARS AGO — Kevin Saurette and Joey Bishoff each had a pair of goals to lead the Brandon AA Wheat Kings to a 7-2 triumph over the St. James Canucks in an exhibition Atom AA hockey game.

• 20 YEARS AGO — Rapid City’s Sharon Drake raced to a gold medal in the women’s 300 metres at a CIS indoor track and field meet at the University of Sherbrooke on the weekend. Drake, a former Manitoba high school sprint champion and graduate of Elton Collegiate, finished with a first-place time of 40.84 seconds.
