IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 50 YEARS AGO — Midwest Masonry dumped Trimac 3-1 in Brandon Minor Hockey Association action with Wally Kaschor, Barry Deacon and Dave Pilchar scoring goals for Midwest.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Ron Weir, Mike Corrigan, Bud Hercina and Ron Lauder scored goals to lead Premier Merchants to a 4-1 victory over Brandon Sabres as the Brandon Men’s Broomball Association opened its 1981-82 season.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Kevin Saurette scored three goals to pace the Brandon Bantam AA Wheat Kings to a 9-3 romp over the River East Marauders in an exhibition minor hockey league game. Dustin Guyda and Ryan McLean each added a pair of goals for Brandon, while Derek Scinocca and Ryan Main chipped in singles.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Brandon’s Lois Fowler won her fourth straight Knickers/Stream and Wood Curlettes League championship. Fowler beat fellow Brandonite Linda Van Daele 10-4 at the Wheat City Curling Club, in what amounted to a championship game. The eight-team league has no playoffs, rather the top team in the round-robin is declared the champion. Fowler entered yesterday’s contest with a 7- 0 record, while Van Daele was 6-1. A win by Van Daele would have given her team the Curlettes title as head-to-head record was the first tie-breaker.
