Brandonite Kristen Campbell made 30 saves and Deloraine’s Ashton Bell scored twice as Manitoba finished in fifth place in the Canada Winter Games women’s hockey competition with a 4-0 victory over British Columbia on Friday night in Prince George, B.C.
Jaycee Magwood of Killarney also scored for Manitoba. Melissa Hunt of Hartney, Jaedon Cooke of Souris, Jalyn Elmes of Brandon and Sheridan Oswald of MacGregor were also members of the Manitoba team.
ALPINE SKIING: Jessica McBride of Virden finished third in her ski cross elimination heat, failing to advance to the quarter-finals.
Jodie Davis of Minnedosa did not advance past the qualification stage.
SPEED SKATING: Carly Foster of Brandon placed 28th in the female 3,000-metre points race, while Jan Verbruggen of Rivers was 48th in the male 3,000m points race.
They also skated for Manitoba’s 3,000m relay teams, which both placed last in their semifinals. Verbruggen and the male team posted a time of four minutes 43.847 seconds, while Foster helped the female team to a time of 5:22.320.
MEDALS: Manitoba finished the first week of the Games with six medals, all of them gold. Two of those medals came on Friday as Manitoba beat Ontario 9-2 to finish at the top of the podium in men’s curling, while the provincial ringette team knocked off Ontario 6-4 in the final.
COMING UP: Competition takes a break for the day as the first-week athletes leave and the second-week participants arrive.
Those competing in the coming week will include hockey players Connor Gutenberg of Brandon, Connor Dewar of Dauphin, Josh Brook of Roblin and Tyler Jubenvill of Gilbert Plains as well as figure skaters Tori Thiessen and Kristen Gutenberg of Brandon and Casey Bertholet of Hartney. Other athletes taking part in the second week include snowboarder Journie Pattle of Brandon and cross-country skier Levi Nadlersmith of Boissevain.
