Hey there, time traveller!

The Kevin Neufeld effect is already impacting Assiniboine Community College women’s volleyball.
The Cougars’ new coach, who currently works with Cats Volleyball Club’s 18-and-under team, signed two of his players Brie Mulligan and Taylor Cox.
“I’m so excited. I wasn’t really planning on doing this but I kind of changed my whole plan,” said Mulligan, who was going to study education at Brandon University but opted for the social service worker program at ACC.
“I kind of considered going to ACC but when Kevin Neufeld moved over there I really wanted to go.
“It’s going to be a whole change in the program because Jeff (Maxwell) was there for quite some time … I feel like it’s going to be a whole different dynamic there.”
Mulligan and Cox have been teammates for years, forming a strong setter-attacker connection with the Neelin Spartans. Mulligan, a five-foot-seven setter, was MVP of the Spartans JV team twice while Cox experimented with every attacking position throughout her career. She started as a middle blocker but moved to left side at Neelin, leading the team to a fourth-place finish at AAA provincials in 2021. Now she’s playing right side for Cats.
Both were named graduating all-stars after the season. They’re close friends off the court, and when asked about each other, immediately bring up positivity.
“She’s super positive, confident and she’s really helpful with her height and her blocking,” Mulligan said. “She knows what to do at the net so that will really help us.”
Cox wasn’t sure she’d like volleyball at first but took to it quickly and has been playing for Cats since Grade 8. She’s still developing her game and is certainly eager to learn from Neufeld for a few more years while studying in the medical administration program.
“He’s very straightforward and tells you what you need to do,” Cox said. “It’s very rewarding to see yourself improve from what he tells you.”
Cox and Mulligan both feel good about their offensive games and are focused on strength training and improving defensively before the 2022-23 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference season.
The Cougars are coming off a down year, going 0-16 and only winning one set before getting swept by St. Boniface in the playoffs on home court.
