The Brandon Wheat Kings will honour one of the greatest hockey players in city history prior to their game at Westman Place on Sunday.

Walter (Turk) Broda, who tended the crease for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1935 to 1952, was selected as one of the top 100 players in the National Hockey League club’s long history and a banner to celebrate the accomplishment has been hanging in the Air Canada Centre.

That banner will be handed over to the city and the Wheat Kings on Sunday prior to the team’s game against the Swift Current Broncos at 4 p.m.

More is expected to be announced on the event this afternoon.

Broda, who was born in 1914 and died in 1972 at age 58, played goal in 629 regular-season games with the Leafs, posting a 302-224-101 record and a 2.53 goals-against average.

He helped Toronto win five Stanley Cups after getting his start playing with the Brandon Athletics and Brandon Native Sons, and was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1967.

On hand to help with the presentation will be another of the city’s greatest players, Bill Derlago, who played with the Leafs for seven seasons from 1979 until 1986. Derlago also played four seasons with the Wheat Kings, and was named one of the Western Hockey League team’s greatest players in fan voting last winter.

Brandon Mayor Rick Chrest and Keystone Centre general manager Jeff Schumacher will accept the banner from Derlago and Broda’s daughter Barb Tushingham.

A similar event took place at the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert, Sask., in March when the Leafs gave the Johnny Bower banner to the Raiders. The Leafs are continuing to celebrate their 100th anniversary, which took place last season, by handing over the banners to the hometowns of the players.
