Hey there, time traveller!

So often when decorating spaces in our homes, we fall a bit flat. After going through the steps of creating a flawless plan, picking out numerous items — and likely changing or altering a few things along the way — it is very common to be left standing in the room and think, “It just needs something.”
Well, you’ve come to the right place.
Here are a few small changes that can take your space from being “average” to “awesome.”

RUG
First up is a great rug. Nothing does the trick quite like the perfect rug to really tie a room together. The right rug can establish colour scheme, and help unify other elements in the room. A rug “grounds” the space.
If your room is super colourful, look for one in neutral tones. If your room feels cold and is full of hard surfaces, try a rug with a bit of texture. Mixing patterns in the space adds a lot of depth, so be brave and try a strong pattern that you love.
ART
No room is ever complete without art, just like no outfit is complete without accessories.

One mistake often made is having artwork that is too small in scale for the space, which makes it look out of place and disproportionate. If you simply can’t find a large enough piece that you love, create a gallery wall of multiple smaller pieces to fill the space.
Another mistake often made is not having enough artwork. Having a blank wall can make a room feel stark and cold. Finding the right balance between not having enough and too much artwork can sometimes be difficult, but so very worth it in creating a killer space.
LIGHTING
Lighting is important not only because fabulous fixtures are great focal points and wow-factors, but also because the right lighting can make you see a room in a completely different way.
Lighting is used at different times of day and for different purposes. A well-lit room will utilize each of the different types of lighting — general, accent, and task. The key to a functional lighting scheme is to know how and when to mix and use them.

PLANTS
Plants bring height, colour, interest, texture and life (quite literally) to any space. They can fill a lonely corner or help divide spaces. And especially as the seasons start to change, having a little extra green inside can be cheering.
TEXTILES
Lastly, textiles are a great way to give your room that final push it needs. They are the elements that make a room warm, comfy, and inviting. Pillows and throws are a given to further add to your colour scheme, but take it a step further with blankets, curtains, and wall coverings to really make your space feel complete, and feel like home.
