Carberry-based T&M Olmstead Farms has been named one of this year’s six recipients of the 2021 Royal Manitoba Winter Fair Farm Family Awards.
The farm is a fifth-generation outfit with two generations actively involved in its day-to-day operations, according to a write-up prepared by fair staff.
The farm is owned and operated by brothers Trent and Myles, plus their respective spouses, Candis and Karen.
Trent and Candis also have children Nathan, Tanner and Michaela, while Myles and Karen have brought kids Bryce (with wife Nikki), Travis and Teanna into the equation.
Bryce runs the cattle side, which consists of a 500-head cow-calf operation, backgrounding and their most recent purebred division.
Trent and Myles are currently preparing the farm for its next generation, with Bryce, Nathan and Tanner making more operational decisions.
In addition to the cattle operation, the family grows crops as well as operating Spud City Food Mart, a grocery store in Carberry operated by Myles and Teanna.
The crop division is based on a healthy rotation that includes canola, wheat, hay and corn alongside potatoes. They employ rotational grazing to increase productivity and carrying capacity, as well as to reduce overgrazing of tame and native pastures.
The family uses unsalable potatoes in the cow rations, which provides an excellent source of carbohydrates, digestible protein and amino acids.
They’ve been active in various Carberry-area organizations and have received a handful of awards over the years, including the 2018 Simplot Grower of the Year — Low Volume, 2012 Manitoba Charolais Commercial Breeder of the Year, and the 2009, 2008 and 2005 McCain Top 10 Grower of the Year awards.
A representative from the Olmstead family did not return phone messages and an email in time for last week’s deadline.
