MINNEDOSA

Celebrating 20 years of live rock ‘n’ roll music, management of Rockin’ the Fields Minnedosa has booked a wealth of Canadian talent as part of the first round of acts announced for the August long weekend.

The lineup includes Toque, a super group comprised of Todd Kerns, Brent Fitz, Shane Gaalaas, and Cory Churko, who have all played on national and international stages with acts such as Shania Twain, Kelly Clarkson, and Slash.

Other band and artists in the lineup are Colin James, Kim Mitchell and Prism, as well as Theory of a Deadman, Amanda Marshall, J Wilde, Econoline Crush, and more.

The music festival will take place from Aug. 2-4.

CYPRESS RIVER

Ongoing renovations to the rink in Cypress River have included siding and lighting improvements that will brighten the winter season for local residents.

Brennen Richmond, president of the Cypress River Rink Board, said work in the curling area and the north wall have been completed.

“We have got a little bit of work to do in the attic, which has some mould issues to take care of, but we have got the rest of the problem solved,” he said. “Once we fix that, we are done for the year.”

New siding has been installed on the east, south and north walls, Richmond said. He noted there is still siding work to be done on the west wall of the building, but that will be complete soon.

With a provincial grant from Efficiency Manitoba, a new LED light system has been installed in the arena and lobby, Richmond said. A few of the new lights were also added to the curling rink area.

GLENBORO

Work on the new sewage lagoon for Glenboro is expected to begin in the spring, according to an area municipal councillor.

Ed Bedford, one of two councillors in Ward 4 of the Municipality of Glenboro-South Cypress, said the tentative plan was to break ground in the spring and hopefully have the project done by October of 2024.

The tender process will be overseen by the Manitoba Water Services Board and the project consultant, J.R. Cousin Consultants of Winnipeg.

CARBERRY

Carberry town council has assembled two petitions regarding safety concerns on highways running through and near the community.

Ray Muirhead, Carberry’s mayor, said those petitions were presented to the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure at the annual meeting of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities in Brandon.

“We had one petition to slow the speed limit down on First avenue, which is actually Highway 351 going through town,” Muirhead said. “It is by a children’s playground, and we want to reduce the speed from 70 to 50 kilometres an hour on that road.”

The other petition was for the short- and long-term plans to improve safety at the intersection of Highway 5 and the Trans-Canada Highway north of Carberry, Muirhead said. That intersection was the site of a semi-truck bus collision in June that killed 17 people.

Noting the efforts of the province, Muirhead said that they did a study for the short-term and put in rumble strips, lights and signs.

“They also did studies of traffic volumes and speeds, and that study was supposed to be done by the end of October, and now it has to go through a review panel,” he said.

DAUPHIN

After a lengthy time not being able to gather the community together, the Dauphin and District Community Foundation hosted a special luncheon last month to announce grant recipients from its fall intake and the Philanthropist of the Year award.

Jason Beyette was honoured with the award, in part for his work in spearheading a grow project which saw 160 acres of canola planted with the proceeds headed for the Dauphin and District Community Foundation when the crop is eventually sold.

Beyette arranged donations of seed and other inputs through the Dauphin Consumers Co-op for the crop, as well as agronomy services from 360 Ag Consulting.

Reit-Syd Equipment looked after all the custom spraying, as well as donating two combines to harvest the crop, which was hauled to the elevator by the Michaleski family.

KILLARNEY

Killarney area farmers Dan and Hertha Penner are back home after their trip to Malawi, Africa, to participate in a Learning Tour with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFB).

The Penners visited four different projects in rural Malawi to learn about the collaboration between the CFB and the organizations in that country to provide food to the poor.

“A highlight for me was just seeing the projects that the Foodgrains Bank is doing there, and there were a couple in particular that were farming projects, where they have helped them to change the ways that they farm so that they can increase their production by a substantial amount,” Dan said. “So, they can not only feed themselves, but also have a little bit left over and get a little further ahead with other areas of their lives as well. That was very encouraging for me to see, and a highlight.”

The Penners hold a presentation about their experience on Jan. 21 during church services at the Lakeview Community Church, and on Jan. 28 during church services at the New Life Assembly Church, both located in Killarney.
