Ottawa is spending more than $3 million to help producers meet worldwide demand for high-quality, sustainable foods, the federal government announced on Tuesday.
“Consumers around the world are looking for more sustainable products, and I have no doubt that our innovative Canadian farmers can meet that demand,” federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay said in a press release.
MacAulay announced more than $3.1 million for the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute (CAPI) under the AgriAssurance Program — National Industry Association Component. The program falls under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

The funding will go toward making improvements to the National Index on Agri-Food Performance, a point of reference for companies to declare the sustainability of their practices, from food production to retail. It considers things like how businesses affect the environment, the quality of food and how they help the economy and society.
Brenna Mahoney, the general manager of Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP), says her organization has been a part of the National Index on Agri-Food Performance since 2022 and is excited to see this investment from the federal government.
“This initiative will … ensure that customers of Canadian agriculture, both domestically and abroad, are able to see the outcome of sustainable practices being used on-farm by our farmers,” Mahoney said in an e-mailed statement to the Sun.
MacAulay said the improvements to the index will help the agri-food sector take advantage of market opportunities, backed up with concrete data.
“By making sure everyone measures sustainability in the same way, we’re moving closer toward our goals both nationally and globally,” he said.
