In a multicultural display of food, music and fun, Westman Immigrant Services’ Russell office is putting on an event to celebrate the people of the region’s rich and varied heritage.

Culturama 2024 is set to take place at the George P. Buleziuk Hall on May 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sponsored by Westman Immigrant Services (WIS), Braendle Bruce, and the Municipality of Russell-Binscarth, the celebration will feature food and culture from many different regions of the world, said Lorelee Deguzman, regional settlement services facilitator.

“When I got this job, I was an immigrant myself, and it’s always nice to remember where your roots come from; where you are rooted. So, I decided to do this program,” Deguzman said of Culturama. “Russell is a very diverse, multicultural community.”

When immigrants come to a rural area, it can be easy for them to feel like outsiders. However, the amount of people from many places — including the Philippines, India, and Ukraine — settling in the community of Russell, located 183 kilometres northwest of Brandon, is changing that, Deguzman said. Culturama, she added, is a wonderful place to meet new people and make them feel welcome.

“It’s about time to get the community together to know their neighbours, to know all their cultures. It’s the connection,” she said.

The cultures and food on display will include Filipino, Ukrainian, Moroccan, French and more. A food sampling from a total of 15 cultures and nationalities promises to bring many fresh flavours to the event, and there will also be plenty of diverse entertainment, including Ukrainian dancers and Francophone singers.

“And then we will have the powwow dancers, and there will be an Austrian who will play the accordion,” Deguzman said.

The last time Culturama took place was before the COVID-19 pandemic, says Hannah Holt, the community outreach manager for WIS.

“They’ve always been really successful,” she said. “Up in Russell, we’ve got people from Mauritius up there, India, there’s just a whole big melting pot of people, all willing to come and share their culture, which is really exciting.”

Tickets for the event cost $15 for adults and $10 for children aged 12 and under. Family passes, which can be purchased for two adults and two children in the same family, cost $40, and children aged five and under get in for free. Tickets are available at Russell’s Filipino Store, Westland Insurance, Braendle Bruce, and the municipal office. Only 300 tickets for the event will be sold.

A portion of the proceeds from Culturama will go to the Russell Food Bank, Deguzman said.
