Special Olympics Westman welcomed athletes from across the province and Saskatchewan recently to compete in a three-sport showcase that included softball, soccer and golf.

At Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex, four teams — the Westman Comets, Regina Wildcats, Winnipeg Goldeyes (Red) and Goldeyes (Blue) — competed in a round-robin tournament.

In their first game, the Comets came out swinging as brothers Rodney and Robert Long launched home runs to pace the Comets to a win over the Goldeyes (Red). Matthew Tweed earned the win on the bump, pitching three shutout innings.

In the second game, the Comets defeated the Goldeyes (Blue) on the strength of a Scott Begg triple which cleared the bases. Blaine Smithson made some incredible defensive plays in the field while Frank McKay picked up the win on the mound.

The final game featured two undefeated teams as the Comets faced off against the Wildcats. After jumping out to an early lead, the Comets held on to win narrowly with Cade Scharff making two incredible picks at third base in the final inning to seal the victory.

“It was an excellent day and a great showcase both on and off the field,” said Comets head coach Warren Day. “I’m incredibly proud of how our team played today; and, maybe more importantly, how they supported each other and showed great sportsmanship with all of the teams we played.”

On the pitch at BYSA, the Westman Cougars hosted the Winnipeg Wolves (Red) in the first game and came away with a victory. Following a brief lunch and rehydration break, the Cougars played the Winnipeg Wolves (Blue) team. Aremedan Gurisho had an excellent game as the Cougars defeated Winnipeg to remain undefeated throughout the day. Craig Bray picked up the second win in net, making some stellar saves to keep the game close early on.

“The competition is about so much more than winning,” Cougars coach Cyndi Price said. “It’s about highlighting inclusivity, development and opportunities within sport. A big thank you to everyone who helped organize the event and showed up to watch.”

The Cougars hope to build on this momentum and are always looking for new players to join their ranks, developing their competitive edge and community spirit.

At Wheat City Golf Course, Becky Brownlee, with her father Ray on the bag, hit fairways and drained putts on the way to capturing top spot in the Ladies Division.

On the men’s side, Jason Normington, with his father Jody caddying, finished in fourth place in the Championship Flight. Corey Bouchard, who was joined by his nephew Lane Hargreaves as his caddy, finished in second place in the First Flight while Jason Woods, caddied by Westman team coach Jed Barber, finished second in the Second Flight.

A special thanks to everyone who coached, volunteered, organized and watched our Westman athletes compete. And remember: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
