The Portage Learning and Literacy Centre (PLLC) is hosting its inaugural Ride for Refuge, a walk and bike fundraiser, to support its new refugee resettlement program.
The event is part of a national initiative where communities across Canada host a walk or bike ride to raise funds for local charities. This year, Portage la Prairie and Morden are the only two Manitoba communities participating.
Althea Almazan, executive assistant at PLLC and event director for the Ride for Refuge, says it’s a great way to get the community involved in helping government-assisted refugees who are new to the city.

“The funds that are going to be raised will go towards our Resettlement Assistance Program, or RAP,” Almazan said. “It’s where we help refugees who we’ve already welcomed here in the city.”
Almazan said the RAP program is new to PLLC this year, and the organization is the only one in Manitoba that has been given the program. Currently, PLLC supports six refugee families with everything from housing and transportation to everyday essentials.
“We are reaching out to all of the local organizations and businesses to partner with us and sponsor the event,” she said. “We are hoping the whole community comes together and registers to walk or bike with us on the day and help us raise funds for a good cause.”
The event is set for Oct. 4 and will take place at on the Crescent Lake multi-use pathways. Registration is free, and participants are asked to fundraise for the program. For those who don’t have time to participate, Almazan says direct donations can be made online, and a charitable tax receipt will be issued for donations over $20.
PLLC is also looking for volunteers to help with the event. Interested individuals can sign up to participate or volunteer through the national event website and by selecting Portage la Prairie as their location.
“We just really need help getting the word out because so far we have a low number of signups, and we’re hoping to reach more people,” Almazan said.
