Scarecrow Days is returning to Souris this weekend with a new theme of the ’80s.
The event, from Sept. 26 to 28, will decorate the town of Souris with scarecrows in the theme of the bright, neon colours of the good ol’ days. A host of events will also take place for the weekend in town, such as zucchini races, a car show and yard sales.
The event is held to grow public fabric and promote the town, said an organizer, Loretta Turner.

“Just bringing the community together, bringing newcomers in, keeping our local residents here and just celebrating what we all think here, that Souris is a great community and a fun community,” she told the Sun this month.
It will be the 34th year of decorating scarecrows.
The activities over the weekend include a largest pumpkin and carrot competition, a farmer’s market, tea and bake sale, a pumpkin rolling competition and a new pie auction fundraiser. The money will go towards a new liner for the pool at the Souris Outdoor Pool in Victoria Park.
Crescent Avenue is the hub of all activity and will be the centre of the event with many activities on Sunday, Turner said.
“I’m really looking forward to Sunday again,” Turner said. “Just really that community event feeling, where people are all coming together at one spot.”

Returning for the second year, zucchini races will be held on Crescent Avenue once more after a successful turnout in 2024 with more than 30 entrants, Turner said. A car show will also be held on the street and a barbecue.
Throughout town, there are also activities lined up across the weekend, however.
Yard sales will take place throughout town on Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free day will be on Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Decorated scarecrows will be part of residential and business properties across Souris as well.
The movie showing this year is E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Cash prizes will be available for best scarecrows built by community members and businesses. Judging will take place on Sept. 25.
