A new echocardiography suite has opened at the Boundary Trails Health Centre, improving access to cardiac testing for residents across southern Manitoba.

The suite was made possible through a donation from the late Bill Lyne and his wife, Colleen Lyne, facilitated by the Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation.

Shared Health said the new facility includes state-of-the-art equipment for non-invasive cardiac testing and is expected to support about 1,600 echocardiograms annually once fully staffed. The added capacity is aimed at reducing the need for patients to travel to Winnipeg for testing.

In a statement, the Lyne family said the couple had discussed making a meaningful contribution to their community prior to Bill Lyne’s death in 2021, and identified the need for local echocardiography services as a priority.

“When they learned about the opportunity for an Echocardiography Suite at Boundary Trails Health Centre, a service they believed the hospital has long merited, they embraced it wholeheartedly; they knew the importance this would bring for essential cardiac care closer to home and reducing the need for trips to Winnipeg,” the family said.

“Colleen expresses deep gratitude to the BTHC team for bringing this vital project to completion. Their deep dedication enhances local health care for neighbours and future generations, making a profound, enduring difference at BTHC.”

Shared Health said the new suite represents a step toward reducing wait times for non-invasive cardiac testing across the province and aligns with broader plans to expand diagnostic services in regional communities.

The project was completed through a partnership involving the donor family, the foundation, Southern Health–Santé Sud and Shared Health.

While the suite is fully constructed and equipped, officials said efforts to recruit permanent diagnostic staff continue. In the meantime, intermittent service is being provided by a Shared Health staff member from Winnipeg.
