Democrat Gina Hinojosa won election Tuesday as governor of Texas, defeating Republican incumbent Greg Abbott. Hinojosa’s win marks an upset victory for Democrats. The state House member from Austin will be Texas’ first Latina governor. She also is the first Democrat to win a governor’s race in the state since 1990. Abbott was seeking an unprecedented fourth term after first winning election in 2014. The Associated Press declared Hinojosa the winner at 11:17 p.m. EST.
