The word is out and that word is ‘free’ for all Scrabble during the summer months.

Lest it sounds like there is a wild melee on Wednesday nights, such is not the case. But we had half a dozen word nerds gather at the Army and Navy Clubrooms at 31 14th Street on the last Wednesday in June. We welcomed Patti Willson back into our midst and she ‘merrily’ played the first bingo.

Fred Saunders broke all records for low scoring eight letters words. His ‘envision’ was a joy to behold as words go but he only nabbed 62 points for it so he then tried again and got just 56 points for his ‘undoings’. Amy didn’t think it was a good play so challenged and found herself without a turn. So in effect, it was her undoing, not his. Nice going, Fred.

Len Sandeman entertained us with his ‘sonnets’ and Amy got ‘fidgety’ after losing her turn.

Carol Enns contributed some clever but oddball words. There was ‘tweaker,’ ‘linea,’ ‘baton,’ ‘purrs,’ ‘remap’ and ‘gloom’. Marg Hilash joined the skirmish with ‘cocoa,’ ‘flyers,’ ‘believe’ and ‘reactions’.

Len Sandeman contributed ‘phial,’ ‘guide,’ ‘lumpy,’ ‘maid,’ ‘vault,’ ‘grebe’ and ‘defined’. Fred claimed the only little word that he thought was cool was ‘gaga’ and, yes, it is a word that makes one feel smitten!

It didn’t take Patti Willson very long to get back into the groove, after being away for a few years. She happily shuffled her letters and ‘deftly’ unscrambled ‘unsaid,’ ‘jived,’ ‘amniotic,’ ‘squat,’ ‘veinier,’ ‘otic,’ ‘weaker’ and ‘adios’.

Amy’s claims to fame were ‘coined,’ ‘elhi,’ ‘fording,’ ‘hmm’ and ‘plews’. None of us, including the fur trader’s daughter herself, knew that plews are beaver pelts. Makes us wonder if anyone else is familiar with that weird word.

The Brandon Scrabble Club will continue to meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Army and Navy Clubrooms at 31-14th Street. During the months of July and August, there will be no charge for members or visitors so come join us, sit down with us and play a spell! Need more information? Call Carol at 726 1117 or Amy at 728 3271.
