BU’s Black joins University of Victoria rugby program

Rugby has officially taken Kypling Black from coast to coast.

The Brandonite played for Team Manitoba at the Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, N.L., last summer, and is headed west this fall. Black has committed to the University of Victoria Vikes for the 2026 Canada West season.

“I’m super excited to go out. I’ve been waiting almost two years to go out,” Black said, adding she originally talked with Vikes head coach Brittany Waters about coming this season but decided against it.

“I’m still so young, I just turned 18, I feel like it’s better I got some university experience and learned how to do a few things on my own before I moved across the country from all my family.”

Breanna Sakal embraced the idea that the journey is more important than the destination.

She didn’t know she’d even have a championship to play for when she joined the Brandon University women’s rugby club five years ago. But she stuck with it and helped a young program grow, join a conference and become a title contender.

BU finished third at the inaugural Prairie University Women’s Rugby Conference championship last year and is the No. 1 seed and host of this year’s tournament. It kicks off today at John Reilly Field.

The No. 2 seed Southern Alberta Institute of Technology plays the University of Saskatchewan at noon, with BU and Mount Royal University clashing at 2 p.m.

BU rugby team caps perfect regular season

Megan Thompson scored two tries and kicked six converts as Brandon University blanked the University of Regina 77-0 in Prairie University Women’s Rugby Club action in Regina on Saturday.

Beth Couling, Breanna Sakal and Madison Vandal each touched the ball down twice as well for BU.

Brandon finished the season in first place at 4-0 and is hosting the league championship weekend.

The semifinals are this Friday at John Reilly Field, with the third-place match and final set for Sunday.

The Brandon Barbarians are hoping a little sibling rivalry can carry the team a long way this weekend.

Richard Pierreroy, 22, and his 18-year-old sibling Adam will be in the lineup on Saturday at noon as the second-place Barbarians (7-3-1) face the first-place Winnipeg Wanderers (9-2-0) at Maple Grove Rugby Park in Rugby Manitoba’s Men’s Division 2 final.

“We’re four years apart, so I never really got to play with him, but I came to watch for the first time last year,” said Adam, who is in his first year with the club. “I’d never tell him, but he’s a good player. We always grew up hating each other as brothers and this brought us closer together. “It’s a lot more fun and a lot easier to try and show him up than at the house was. I like the competition again.”

Richard sees it the same way.

The Brandon Barbarians parlayed a flawless first half into a trip to Rugby Manitoba’s Men’s Division 2 final next weekend, beating the visiting Winnipeg Assassins 46-22 in the semifinals on Saturday at John Reilly Field.

“It was almost a complete shutdown on their side,” said Richard Pierreroy, who had a pair of tries for Brandon. “If we had played through the entire game like that, they would have had no points at all. We could have totally shut them out.”

In the other semifinal, the fourth-place Dauphin Mavericks (5-6-0) fell 24-12 to the first-place Winnipeg Wanderers (8-2-0) in a game that was tied 12-12 at the half.

A preview of coming attractions arrived early on Saturday morning at John Reilly Field. The second-place Assassins, who were 6-4-1 in the regular season, received the ball off the kickoff and while they held it off for a while, they had to battle for every yard.

Arevalo lifts Cougars to first victory

Kiyanna Arevalo scored the game’s only goal as the Assiniboine College Cougars earned their first victory of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference women’s soccer season on Sunday.

The Cougars (1-5-0) blanked the St. Boniface Les Rouges 1-0 in Winnipeg.

On Saturday, Arevalo found the net but the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers scored in added time to beat the Cougars 2-1.

The Brandon University Bobcats (5-0-0) blanked the Blazers 6-0 on Sunday as Brogan Henry and Keashae Masters each scored twice, with Deborah Meron and Laure Dizengremel adding singles.

Randy Cooke had the first two tries of his senior men’s career to lift the Brandon Barbarians to a 39-7 victory over the visiting Manitoba Wombats in Premier Men’s Division 2 action at John Reilly Field on a sweltering Saturday afternoon.

“It’s like a 400-pound gorilla on my back so it was pretty nice to get that off,” Cooke said. “I think everyone in the league knew I hadn’t scored a try until today so it’s nice to get that one over with.”

Manitoba, which has a combined team with the Brumbies, had a strong start after allowing Brandon to recover its game-opening kick, gaining possession and driving down the field for a try by Abe Gonzalez two minutes 45 seconds into the contest.

When Manitoba stopped Brandon at its own goal-line, the Wombats bench became animated, with one player shouting, “We run this town!” and another quickly adding, “We run this village!”

The Souris native is back in Westman after a year of Canada West rugby with the University of Calgary Dinos. She has transferred to Brandon University and joined its team, but will first help the Brandon Barbarians senior women chase a Rugby Manitoba championship.

Couling not only scored her first try as a Barb in the team’s 44-22 win over the Dauphin Mavericks in Saturday’s home opener at John Reilly Field, she completed a hat trick.

But she won’t take an ounce of credit.

Mavs Fest will showcase the growing sport of rugby in Dauphin today.

Organizer Shawn Sarkonak said rugby, which is seeing increased numbers and incredible success in the Parkland community, will host the day-long event at the Vermillion Park Sportsplex on the northwest side of the city.

“That’s why we’re really looking at this weekend as being very successful, albeit it looks like it’s going to be pretty wet,” Sarkonak said. “I think that’s when it’s best to play, is in the rain, so I’m looking forward to it. I think it’s going to be a great success.”

For the past few years, the Parkland Pirates youth team has been running a spring league and jamboree in conjunction with Neepawa, Steinbach, Winnipeg and Selkirk. Each team holds its own jamboree, so Dauphin organizers decided to build on the event with some provincial and senior action.

Julien Lopez scored three tries as the Dauphin Clippers knocked off the top-seed Souris Sabres 42-21 in the Westman High School Rugby boys’ final in Souris on Saturday.

Ben Miner, Landon Garton and Ronan Mouck added tries for Dauphin, with Colton Miner going a perfect 6-for-6 on convert attempts.

Colby Pentecost did all the scoring for the Sabres, with three tries and three converts.

In the girls’ final, Dauphin beat Souris 45-5 for its third straight title.

SOURIS — Regardless of how far Emily Tuttosi goes in rugby, it’s not a one-way journey.

The Souris native has spent seven seasons in the United Kingdom playing professionally, first with the Loughborough Lighting and now with the Exeter Chiefs. She not only cracked the Team Canada roster for the 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup — played in 2022 due to COVID-19 — but led the squad in scoring as it reached the medal rounds for the first time since 2014.

She’s in the middle of a push for a roster spot for the 2025 World Cup, but before heading back to train with the national team she spent a couple of afternoons training the varsity boys and girls in her hometown as they gear up for the Westman High School Rugby season.

“Any time Emily comes back — and she’s really good at giving back to the program — she does generate some excitement,” said Souris coach Brian Yon, one of Tuttosi’s first coaches.
