SIXTY YEARS AGO
Astronaut John Glenn Jr. yesterday became the first American to orbit the earth. Glenn’s rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral at 9:47 a.m. EST and he completed his first orbit in 88.29 minutes. Glenn completed three orbits of the earth in his two-ton Friendship 7 spacecraft before making his re-entry and landing in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of The Bahamas. The United States man-in-space program has cost an estimated US$400 million so far, including the attempt to hurl Glenn into orbit.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Margaret Laurence’s hometown won’t be in an upcoming movie of one of her novels. Neepawa was ruled out as a location by Credo Group Ltd., as Winnipeg-based film production company that is mounting a made-for-TV adaptation of “The Diviners.”
FORTY YEARS AGO
The federal government’s task force on services to the public has installed its new Telidon system at Brandon University. The system is designed to make government service listings available to Brandon residents. About 35,000 pages of information is currently available on the system.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Canadian astronaut Roberta Bondar received a hero’s welcome in her hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., yesterday, complete with red carpet and red roses and a big hug from her mom. It was the first time Bondar has touched down in her home base since soaring into history a month ago as Canada’s first female astronaut, spending eight days aboard the NASA space shuttle Discovery.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The Agricore United grain elevator will close in Alexander today, delivering a severe economic blow to this small western Manitoba community. The same day staff at Agricore United were wrapping up their final day of business in Alexander, it had already closed shop in Virden. The closures in Virden and Alexander are part of a plan by the agribusiness giant to consolidate operations. The company, created by the merger of Agricore and United Grain Growers, made the move to consolidate operations, company spokeswoman Tracey Bryksa said.
TEN YEARS AGO
Friends of two Brandon men killed in a two-car collision over the weekend rallied together Monday. “They were great guys,” said Jerrod Cayer, who helped organize a car rally less than 72 hours after the crash to support grieving friends. Jarred Armstrong, 19, and Braden Ducharme Westlake, 18, were killed when their car collided head-on with another car on Highway 10 just south of Highway 2 early Saturday morning.
Whitney Houston was laid to rest Sunday at a brief private ceremony in New Jersey, the end of a weekend that saw the pop star’s family and friends gather at a star-studded funeral to mourn her loss while celebrating her career.
