SIXTY YEARS AGO

An American truck driver tried to nip into the rear beer parlour entrance of the Wheat City Hotel this week and took his truck with him. Nobody was hurt, but the truck left a gaping eight-foot hole in the hotel wall. The wall crumbled and smashed the truck’s windshield and several old windows inside the hotel, narrowly missing an air compressor.

Viscount Amory, high commissioner for the United Kingdom in Canada, paid a brief visit to Camp Shilo and the Royal Canadian School of Artillery.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Manitoba horsemen continued their fine showing in the Regina Light Horse Show last night, with the Gilbert Brothers of Brandon leading the way with the top two placings in the hackney pony class.

FORTY YEARS AGO

At a press conference during the Winter Fair, Agricultural Minister Eugene Whelan announced a $2-million extension to the Brandon Research Station.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Gerald Raes of Deloraine was selected the grand champion producer during the egg show at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Sticking with McKenzie Seeds for better or for worse helped co-owners Michael Fearon and Ken Robinson snap up the President’s Award for Business Persons of the Year from the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, says chamber president Dan Trotter. Fearon and Robinson bought McKenzie Seeds in July after McKenzie’s partner company, Toronto-based MDC Corp., announced it would liquidate the company.

Westman Communications Group is poised to take control of two Brandon radio stations by Sept. 1. Riding Mountain Broadcasting Ltd., which owns 880 CKLQ and 94.7 Star FM, will belong to Westman Communications pending approval by the Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commission. Westman owned a 40 per cent stake of the company and has announced it is buying the remainder from a local ownership group consisting of Don Kille, Ron Kille, Rick Kille, Brian Martineau and Don Sullivan.

TEN YEARS AGO

There has been a new twist in a fatal hit-and-run case. Initially, a Waywayseecappo First Nation woman was charged for allegedly being the driver of a car that struck and fatally injured Mathew Wayne Hanska. But it appears the investigation has now taken a different direction as the woman’s former boyfriend now faces charges that point to him as being the driver instead.
