FORTY YEARS AGO
Doreen Sharratt of Brandon was named Manitoba outstanding sports volunteer of the year at a reception at Governor’s House.
Finance Minister Marc Lalonde carried 60 letters back to Ottawa this weekend requesting the federal government operating licence for Pacific Western Airlines’ Brandon route.
Beer drinkers in Manitoba will be paying more to wet their whistles as of May 1. A 12-pack of Molson’s will be boosted to $7.45 and $14.25 for two dozen.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Marni McFadden, a Minnedosa teenager, and Arlene Collier of Virden are among six people honoured this week by Premier Gary Filmon for making exceptional contributions to their communities.
Two more finalists in the 1993 edition of the Bud Country Talent Search have been determined. Jeff Worth and Dave Oakey, both of Rivers, were declared winners last week at the competition at the Trails West Motor Inn.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
A $500,000 pile of household waste will go from sitting in the ground to powering a state-of-the-art recycling facility that comes online in Brandon next week. The city’s new Material Recovery Facility, which sits beside the Eastview Landfill, will become fully operational next week, with 18 employees shipping off plastic jugs, newspapers and tin cans so they can be reused or made into something totally different.
A hectic year is likely ahead for Brandon family physician Dr. Stephen Duncan, who will be installed tomorrow as president of the Manitoba Medical Association. Duncan is a native Brandonite who has been with the Brandon Clinic since 1992.
TEN YEARS AGO
New legislation that requires kids to wear helmets while riding their bikes is about to take effect. Local shops that sell bikes and bike accessories are already reporting an increasing interest in helmets, with less than a week to go before the new rule is enforced.
It looks like Winnipeg will play host to 5,000 of Canada’s best amateur athletes in 2017. The organizers of the Canada Summer Games will announce the winning bid to hold the 2017 event — which will undoubtedly feature a number of future Olympians — at a press conference on Friday at The Forks.
