TODAY

10:15 to 11 a.m. — Every Thursday throughout June will feature Storytimes with Michelle for preschoolers at the Brandon Public Library. Little ones can enjoy a story, song and craft. The presence of a caregiver or parent is required. No registration necessary.

6 p.m. — Daly House Museum presents An Old Time Radio Show and Dinner at the Ukrainian Reading Association Hall (1005 Assiniboine Ave.) The Assiniboine Theatre Company recreates the old-time radio shows as they would have been performed in the ’40s and ’50s. Tickets are $55 for members; $60 non-members. To order tickets, contact the museum office at 204-727-1722 or email dalymuseum@wcgwave.ca.

FRIDAY

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Brandon Farmers’ Market inside The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave., Brandon). Local fresh produce, baking, jams and jellies, pickling, yarn, bison, beef, beeswax candles, crafts and more. This event runs year-round.

10:30 to 11 a.m. — Every Friday is toddler time at the Shoppers Mall branch of the Western Manitoba Regional Library. Join Robin for stories, songs and playtime. A parent or caregiver must attend. No registration is required.

7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. — “Steppin’ Out” Dance at the Royal Canadian Legion No. 3 in Brandon. Live music played by “Nite Life.” Admission $15. Refreshments included. For more information, call 204-728-5636.

SATURDAY

8 a.m. — Pioneer Power and Equipment Club’s 25th annual show will take place at the Commonwealth Air Training Museum (Brandon Airport) featuring antique farm equipment and automobiles on display, tractor activities, tractor race, parade of equipment plus a 50/50 raffle draw. Pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m.; events 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Children’s activities include a pedal tractor pull at noon.

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Join the City of Brandon Parks and Rec Department in celebrating National Garden Day in Stanley Park (1400 block of Princess Avenue), with more than 1,000 plants pre-grown in the city greenhouse to give away! There will also be a hotdog barbecue, live music, face painting, bounce castle, spray park, First Peoples garden exhibit, outdoor games and much more. This is a free event and all are welcome.

10 a.m. — Eat Your Colours at the Global Market. A great selection of vegetable and bedding plants, flowers, asparagus and so much more. Let’s not forget about the deliciously homemade baked goods and preserves, and the beautifully crafted home decor. The Global Market runs every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. inside the Building Re-Fit Store at 23 12th St.

12:30 p.m. — Show your Pride at Brandon City Hall (410 Ninth St.) for the rally to start off Brandon’s Pride March. Remember to bring water and dress for the weather. Gather on Ninth Street alongside city hall at 12:30 p.m. for a smudging, prayer, a speech from the chair of Brandon Pride, and the introduction of the Pride March 2023 grand marshals. The march will move onto Victoria Avenue and move east toward Rideau Park where we will enter off Franklin Street to begin Pride in the Park. The Pride March will be directed by Brandon Police Service traffic officers and there will be cooling and water stations with trash bins available along the route.

3 p.m. — MADD Brandon and Area is hosting the fourth annual Strides for Change colour walk/run at the Keystone Centre. Registration starts at 3 p.m.; please arrive by 4:15 p.m. to sign in and get your three packages of dye (additional packets are available for purchase). Run options are 2.5 kilometres or five kilometres and start at 5:30 p.m. Food trucks, music, kids’ activities and prizes for top fundraising individual, team and best costume. Cost: adult and youth 12 years and older $25; 11 and under are free. Anyone who raises more than $100 for the run will receive more colour packets and other run attire, while supplies last! 4 to 10 p.m. — Father’s Day Grilling Competition will be held at SIN BIN at J & G Homes Arena. Selected teams will face off in an amateur grilling competition. Live music, beer gardens, mini golf, $20 all-you-can-eat buffet. Cost is $10 at the door.

7 p.m. — The first summer event for Poor Michael’s Bookshop in Onanole takes place today. The Cold Reads and Cold Beers event, presented by the Wormhole Microtheatre Company, is described as “short plays read with gusto.” Seating is limited, so reserve your spot.

SUNDAY

8:30 a.m. to noon — Bring your dad and your fishing rods to the Father’s Day Fishing event at Dinsdale Park, brought to you by the Men’s Resource Centre of Brandon. The event includes free breakfast at 8:30 a.m. There will be awards for biggest fish caught.

Noon to 3 p.m. — Father’s Day Flower Giveaway. For those who have lost their father, husband or a child, Father’s Day can be a difficult time. Brockie Donovan will be handing out complimentary flowers at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. For more information, call Brockie Donovan Funeral and Cremation Services at 204-727-0694.

4 to 6 p.m. — Shoal Lake Curling Club is hosting a Father’s Day Fish Fry at the Shoal Lake Communiplex. Adults $22; 12 and under $10. Takeout orders available by calling 204-365-7087.

5 p.m. — Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 3 (560 13th St. East) is holding a Fathers’ Day Fish Fry with Lake Winnipeg pickerel. Tickets are $18 and available at the Legion until June 14. Can also call 204-728-5026.

MONDAY

1:15 to 4 p.m. — The East End Sunshine Card Club meets Mondays at the East End Community Centre at the corner of Victoria Avenue East and Park Street. Coffee and snacks. Members and guests welcome. For more information, call 204-727-3539.

6:30 p.m. — UCT Travo Bingo (205 College Ave., Brandon) takes place every Monday. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the early bird starts at 6:30 p.m. Regular games start at 7:10 p.m. Chase the Ace each week. Proceeds go to help those in need in Brandon and area.

6:45 p.m. — Regular evening lawn bowling begins another season at Rideau Park (345 Park St.) Monday to Thursday. Please come out to enjoy Rideau Park, socialize and learn a new sport. Equipment is provided and your first game is free, $5 thereafter. Memberships can be purchased for the entire season.

TUESDAY

6:30 p.m. — Music in the Park takes place at Princess Park every Tuesday from June to August. This week features Allen McColl. This event is free to attend. All are welcome.

WEDNESDAY

10:30 to 11 a.m. — Baby Storytime at the Shoppers Mall branch of the Western Manitoba Regional Library (1570 18th St., Brandon) every Wednesday throughout June. Rhymes, songs, lap bounces and stories. For babies less than a year old up to 18 months with their parents or caregivers. No registration required.

1 to 4 p.m. — Join the Brandon Scrabble Club on Wednesdays at the Brandon Public Library for Scrabble, coffee and laughs. Scrabble boards are provided by the club and all levels of skill are welcome. No registration is required for this program.

1:30 to 3:30 p.m. — The Brandon Embroiderers meet weekly to share their love of needlework, learn new skills and stitch together. All levels and abilities are welcome to attend. Call Dianne at 204-725-1445 or Darlene at 204-727-1624 for more information.

3:20 to 4:45 p.m. — LEGO Bricks and Bits Club at the Lakeland Regional Library (318 Williams Ave., Killarney). LEGO provided. No registration required. Build your own adventure, complete challenges and LEGO builds displayed weekly.

5 to 8 p.m. — Wednesday Knights at Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon). The Brandon Knights Chess Club meets at Chez Angela on Wednesday evenings. All skill levels are welcome.

AT THE CLUBS

The 40 (210 18th St. North, Brandon) — Hothead Productions presents Locals Only 10 for two nights! Friday’s lineup includes Aaron Frost, Geezer, Darth’s Brother Jeff, Turbo Charged Caravan. Saturday has 43 Collective, Skullenblitz, Just Dynamite, Houston & the Dirty Rats (from New Jersey). Doors open at 8:30 p.m.; bands start at 9 p.m. Cost is $10 at the door each night. This is an +18 event and photo ID required for entry.

Lady of the Lake (135-B 17th St. North, Brandon) — Frank Patrick performs on Friday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Queerly Beloved, a Winnipeg-based comedy show featuring comics from the 2SLGBTQ+ community, will follow. Join headliner Veronica along with Taylor Paige, Willow Rosenberg and your host Chris Ash for an evening of laughs! This is an 18+ event and tickets are $10 at the door or can be purchased in advance. Remember to call for your table reservation after you purchase show tickets.

Sand Hills Casino — Classic Rock band Crush entertain on Friday and Saturday at the Oasis Bar and Grill. Live and free.

Section 6 Brew Company ( 1126 Princess Ave.) — Live music on Friday with Jakeleg at 7:30 p.m.

Chez Angela Bakery and Café (29-C 10th St.) — Upcoming June 23: Sol James will perform at the Café with some jazz standards, originals and familiar covers. This event includes a multi-course menu paired with mocktails, cocktails, wine and local craft beer. Tickets are $95 and include the show and the chef’s menu. MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — The only museum in the world dedicated to telling the story of the more than 200,000 gunners who served Canada. The museum’s collection consists of more than 65,000 artifacts and includes more than 170 artillery pieces and vehicles. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. Admission: $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students (six to 18 years old), free for children under six. Phone 204-765-3000 (ext. 3570) or email RCAMuseum@forces.gc.ca. The “In Service of Peace” exhibit continues at the museum until the end of August. The exhibit highlights Canada’s experience in peacekeeping and peacemaking.

Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. We are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. Visitors will be invited to travel back to the 1940s while touring a Second World War vintage hangar serving as s display area for aircraft, vehicles and hundreds of artifacts from that era. The 18,039 RCAF who lost their lives during the war are honoured on the museum’s RCAF Second World War Memorial Wall. The museum is proud to be one of the seven Manitoba Signature Museums, a Manitoba Star Attraction and a National Historic Site.

Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June); Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. (July and August). Admission: $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth (six to 18 years old), family (up to two adults and three children) $12, and children under five are free. Phone 204-727-1722 for more information.

Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — A “contemporary art gallery that celebrates artistic excellence and diversity within our region and beyond.” The AGSM is Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first. Hours: 4 to 9 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Phone 204-727-1036 or email: info@agsm.ca. Until June 17 — “Stimulus/Response” by The Drawn Together Collective. In this exhibition, the 10 current members of the collective respond to works written by women of the Canadian Prairies, from the quintessential world of Margaret Lawrence’s “Manawaka” to a coming-of-midlife memoir written by a childhood friend.

Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — Originally the Frame House was built in 1888 by James F. Frame. A hardware merchant and prominent citizen in the community. Entering the museum is like stepping back in time to the 1880s, as you’ll notice the Victorian stylings throughout the home, which is complete with a spacious coach house. Houses a collection of more than 11,000 items. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Guided tours and admission prices: $5 for adults; $2 for school-aged children and free for children under five. Groups of eight or more receive a 50 per cent discount on admissions.

Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed all statutory holidays. Special tours can be arranged by calling the arts administrator at 431-280-0023.

Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St.) — Exhibits include Manitoba telephone history, Brandon History Hall, the BJ Hales Gallery and the William G. Hobbs Heritage Collection of painting prints. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Booking in advance is strongly recommended. Phone 204-717-1514 or email bgmainfo@wcgwave.ca.

26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum (within the Brandon Armoury, 1116 Victoria Ave.) — The museum is open Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed for lunch. Also open by appointment.

ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa, in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours are: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays; closed on weekends.

UPCOMING EVENTS

June 22 — Three-time Manitoba Country Music Association Fan’s Choice Award Winner, two-time Manitoba Country Music Association female artist of the year, CFL halftime and Dauphin Countryfest Mainstage performer Kendra Kay will be live on the Fusion Credit Union Stage at the Riverbank Discovery Centre starting at 7 p.m., with an opening act performance kicking off the show at 6:30 p.m.

June 23 — Come to the corner of 12th Street and Princess Avenue and celebrate the Summer Soulstice block party! Feed your soul and celebrate one of the longest days of the year with a barbecue, beer, activities and live music. From 11 a.m. to 11:55 p.m. Princess Avenue will be blocked off.

June 24 — The Brandon Riverbank invites everyone to a free outdoor movie night extravaganza for “Super Mario Bros.” at 8 p.m. Join us for an evening of fun at our Fusion Credit Union Stage.

June 25 — Westman Jams gathers on the last Sunday of each month to play classic country music at the Douglas Community Hall (201 Provincial Road 340, Douglas) from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome. We accept donations to the Reg Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund to help send Westman students to the International Music Camp at the International Peace Garden.

June 27 — The Minnedosa Horticultural Society is holding its annual Peony and Summer Flower Show in the United Church hall from 2 to 4 p.m. Refreshments served. Entries to be placed 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Everyone welcome to attend and to exhibit. Show books available at the RM office or by calling 204-867-5244.

June 30 — The East Side Eatery (1451 Richmond Ave. East) is hosting Edmonton’s Fall of Earth while on tour in support of their recently released album From the Ashes.

July 6-9 — The community of Rivers is hosting “Rolling into Rivers” event featuring class reunions, golf tournaments, old-fashioned turkey shoot, pancake breakfasts, parade, Rivers Pipe Band reunion, barbecues, vehicle shows, beer gardens and entertainment, fireworks and much, much more. On Saturday, the Rivers Train Station Restoration Committee will hold a draw for a VIA Rail Winnipeg to Churchill and return trip and a Sekine Heritage Bicycle draw. Sunday features an antique tractor trek to Clack’s Museum. Registration required with Tom/Jean Ryall 204-328-7546 or Harry/Joan Airey 204-328-7103. There will also be a paddle poker derby on Rivers Lake. Registration required by contacting Dave Falkevitch 204-729-7203.

July 7 — “Tina: Simply The Best” will take place at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium at 8 p.m. Tickets available at the WMCA box office or by calling 204-728-9510.

Aug. 13 — Ladies Western Scramble takes place at the Wheat City golf course with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Deadline for registration is Aug. 7. This is a two-lady team event.
