SIXTY YEARS AGO
Virden public school was officially renamed Mary Montgomery School at a program in Virden honouring Montgomery on the occasion of her retirement after 50 years in the teaching profession — 30 of them in the school now bearing her name.
A leading figure in the Brandon agricultural community died in Brandon General Hospital. Archibald Marquis Macpherson, 72, owner of Homecrest Farm on the Valley Road, died after a brief illness.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Municipal Affairs Minister Howard Pawley was surrounded by members of the Sandy Lake Medical Nursing Home Board as he turned the sod to begin construction on the new $450,000 building. The hospital will house 36 beds.
The auditorium at Linden Lanes School was filled to capacity recently in honour of retiring custodian Ed Kirk.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Gardewine North Ltd. has won its day in court over a Manitoba Motor Transport Board decision revoking the trucking company’s licence to haul freight into Neepawa.
The Brandon Gun Club and the Brandon Hills community rink will receive capital grants to expand their facilities.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Six months after Ontario backed out of a $13-billion power sale and put Manitoba Hydro’s development plans on hold, the utility is cutting staff to save money. Manitoba Hydro — the province’s largest Crown corporation — plans to pare about 480 positions from its workforce of 4,400 over the next year.
The Westman Sport Association officially awarded the 1994 Winter Games to Virden at a press conference at the Royal Oak Inn today. Between 800 and 1,000 athletes are expected to compete at the Games from Feb. 4-6.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Eugena Moore couldn’t deny the ink in her blood. “She grew up with that kind of feeling in her blood,” says friend and former colleague Dirk Aberson. “Ever since she was a little girl she had a desire to work in newspapers.” Moore, 93, died of natural causes at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. As the former editor of the Women’s Pages at the Brandon Sun, Moore joined the ranks in 1960. She held the position for 15 years.
After 14 years at the helm of the Brandon YMCA, Marty Snelling has resigned his post as chief executive officer. Snelling tendered his resignation to YMCA board president Craig Senchuk yesterday morning.
TEN YEARS AGO
Floodwaters in the small community of Reston continue to recede after a short yet devastating rainstorm left many residents in the RM of Pipestone scrambling to save their homes. Late Friday night, a storm walloped the Westman region, dumping as much as eight inches of rain in just a few hours in the area, with Reston getting the brunt of Mother Nature’s havoc.
More than half of the population of Deloraine were sitting in the park next to Hasselfield Drugs on Broadway on Saturday afternoon. The reason was to celebrate 110 years of service from the pharmacy that has been owned and operated in the town of around 1,000 people by the same family through four generations.
