TODAY

• 10:15 to 11 a.m. — Every Thursday throughout July will feature Story and Song Circle with Michelle for preschoolers at the Brandon Public Library. Little ones can enjoy a story, song and craft. The presence of a caregiver or parent is required. No registration necessary.

• 7 p.m. — Virden’s Music in the Park takes place every Thursday on the Jubilee Stage in Victoria Park (in case of rain, at the Legion Hall). Tonight will feature Mitchell Makoons.

• 7 p.m. — Greg Rekus and the Inside Job will be joined by guests Vertigo, Jan Ek at the Eastside Eatery (1451 Richmond Ave. E.) banquet venue (west doors). Open at 6:30 p.m. Bands at 7 p.m. $10 entry.

FRIDAY

• 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Brandon Farmers’ Market inside The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave., Brandon). Local fresh produce, baking, jams and jellies, pickling, yarn, bison, beef, beeswax candles, crafts and more. This event runs year-round.

• 10:30 to 11 a.m. — Every Friday is toddler time at the Shoppers Mall branch of the Western Manitoba Regional Library. Join Robin for stories, songs and playtime. A parent or caregiver must attend. No registration is required.

• 7:30 p.m. — Poor Michael’s Emporium (322 Highway No. 10 at Onanole) hosts roots powerhouse duo, The Small Glories with Cara Luft and JD Edwards on the patio! Advance tickets are $30. For more information visit poormichaels.ca or call 204-848-0336.

• 9:20 p.m. — The Shamrock Drive In (Killarney) is open for the season. Gates open at 9:20 p.m. with the movie beginning when deemed dark enough. Admission is $30 per vehicle or $10 per person ages 13 and up. Those under 12 years of age are free. Concession available. Showing tonight through July 16: “The Super Mario Bros Movie.”

SATURDAY

• 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Come out and visit the Farmers’ Market at the Riverbank Discovery Centre every Saturday until Sept. 23.

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Wasagaming Community Arts is thrilled to be hosting its annual two-day Rawhide and Jelly Roll Makers Market this weekend! This market will provide a fun and inspiring space for artisans and shoppers to meaningfully connect. Stroll through the Onanole Recreation Centre and meet the dedicated makers and artists from all over the province. Door cover charge is $5.

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Chess with the Brandon Knights Chess Club takes place every Saturday at the Brandon Public Library. All skills welcome. Boards and pieces will be supplied.

• 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. — Doors Open Brandon is a weekend event offering visitors a chance to explore historically significant sites throughout the city. SUNDAY

• 9 a.m. — The Sand Hills Casino Car Show will kick off with a 9 a.m. registration. Come and show off your ride! Registered participants are eligible for ballot draws with cash prizes, free barbecue lunch and a free limited edition T-shirt. There will be live music throughout the event. Spectators can get the barbecue lunch for only $5 while supplies last.

MONDAY

• 1:15 to 4 p.m. — The East End Sunshine Card Club meets Mondays at the East End Community Centre at the corner of Victoria Avenue East and Park Street. Coffee and snacks. Members and guests welcome. For more information, call 204-727-3539.

• 6 to 8 p.m. — It’s Open Knitting Night at Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon). Bring your yarn and needles or whatever you are working on.

• 6:30 p.m. — UCT Travo Bingo (205 College Ave., Brandon) takes place every Monday. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the early bird starts at 6:30 p.m. Regular games start at 7:10 p.m. Chase the Ace each week. Proceeds go to help those in need in Brandon and area.

• 6:45 p.m. — Regular evening lawn bowling begins another season at Rideau Park (345 Park St.) Monday to Thursday. Please come out to enjoy Rideau Park, socialize and learn a new sport. Equipment is provided and your first game is free, and $5 thereafter. Memberships can be purchased for the entire season.

• 7 p.m. — Lawn bowling at Stanley Park (15th Street and Princess Avenue) takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from June to September. Bowls and instructions provided. Try it for free. Join us for fun and light exercise.

TUESDAY

• 6:30 p.m. — Music in the Park takes place at Princess Park every Tuesday from June through August. This week features Wheat City Jug Band. This event is free to attend. All are welcome.

WEDNESDAY

• 1 to 4 p.m. — Join the Brandon Scrabble Club on Wednesdays at the Brandon Public Library for Scrabble, coffee and laughs. Scrabble boards are provided by the club and all levels of skill are welcome. No registration is required for this program.

• 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. — The Brandon Embroiderers meet weekly to share their love of needlework, learn new skills and stitch together. All levels and abilities are welcome to attend. Call Dianne at 204-725-1445 or Darlene at 204-727-1624 for more information.

• 10 a.m. — The Daly House Museum Victorian Garden July Kids’ Summer Fun Program continues today with Terracotta pot painting. All programs run from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Please register by the Tuesday prior to the first program your child wishes to attend. There’s a $10 registration fee for each program. • 11 a.m. — The World Clydesdale Show takes place in the Westoba Agricultural Centre of Excellence at the Keystone Centre starting today and running until July 23. • 3:20 to 4:45 p.m. — LEGO Bricks and Bits Club at the Lakeland Regional Library (318 Williams Ave., Killarney). LEGO provided. No registration required. Build your own adventure, complete challenges and LEGO builds displayed weekly.

• 6 to 8 p.m. — Wednesday Knights at Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon). The Brandon Knights Chess Club meets at Chez Angela on Wednesday evenings. All skill levels are welcome.

AT THE CLUBS

• The 40 (210 18th St. North, Brandon) — Come help us celebrate the 20th anniversary of Ridgefest on Friday and Saturday. Eight local bands with supply the entertainment: Ambam, The Ashbury Dyke, 8 Track Shuffle, The Invisible Men, Matt Cory, Geezer, Tangled and Gear Machine. $10 admission nightly. There will also be a 50/50 and prize draws nightly. Chances to win tickets to Skid Row and Buckcherry (Westoba Place Oct. 21). This is an 18+ event and photo ID is required. Net proceeds go toward a bursary for the Brandon University School of Music.

• Lady of the Lake (135-B 17th St. North, Brandon) — Come and enjoy some country music on Friday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with Cody Wilkinson. Then the main feature of the night is a Comedy Invasion with comedians Nelson Mayer, Scott Porteous, Clayton T. Stewart. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are one for $10 or two for $15 and are available at ladyofthelake.ca.

• Sand Hills Casino (777 Sand Hill Dr., Carberry) — Join us for a weekend of some classic rock/country with Damn Straight on Friday and Saturday at the Oasis Bar and Grill. Live and free. Also on Sunday it is the annual 2023 Sand Hills Casino Car Show kicking off at noon. Subject to change depending on weather.

• Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon) — Free music Fridays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Come check us out!

• Section 6 Brew Company ( 1126 Princess Ave.) — Live music on Friday with Lucky Ned at 7 p.m.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

• Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — The only museum in the world dedicated to telling the story of the more than 200,000 gunners who served Canada. The museum’s collection consists of more than 65,000 artifacts and includes more than 170 artillery pieces and vehicles. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. The “In Service of Peace” exhibit continues at the museum until the end of August. The exhibit highlights Canada’s experience in peacekeeping and peacemaking.

• Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. Visitors will be invited to travel back to the 1940s while touring a Second World War vintage hangar serving as a display area for aircraft, vehicles and hundreds of artifacts from that era. The 18,039 RCAF members who lost their lives during the war are honoured on the museum’s RCAF Second World War Memorial Wall. The museum is proud to be one of the seven Manitoba Signature Museums, a Manitoba Star Attraction and a National Historic Site. For July and August: Ace Academy, a virtual reality exhibit. Come fly a Second World War biplane included in your admission.

• Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Museum hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June); Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. (July and August). Admission: $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth (six to 18 years old), family (up to two adults and three children) $12, and children under five are admitted free. • Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — A “contemporary art gallery that celebrates artistic excellence and diversity within our region and beyond.” The AGSM is Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first. Hours: 4 to 9 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Phone 204-727-1036 or email: info@agsm.ca. • Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — The Frame House was built in 1888 by James F. Frame. A hardware merchant and prominent citizen in the community. Entering the museum is like stepping back in time to the 1880s, as you’ll notice the Victorian stylings throughout the home, which is complete with a spacious coach house. Houses a collection of more than 11,000 items. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Guided tours and admission prices: $5 for adults; $2 for school-aged children and free for children under five. Groups of eight or more receive a 50 per cent discount on admissions.

• Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed all statutory holidays. Special tours can be arranged by calling the arts administrator at 431-280-0023.

• Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St.) — Exhibits include Manitoba telephone history, Brandon History Hall, the BJ Hales Gallery and the William G. • 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum (within the Brandon Armoury, 1116 Victoria Ave.) — The museum is open Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed for lunch. Also open by appointment.

• ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa, in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours are: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays; closed on weekends.

UPCOMING EVENTS

• July 20 — Daly House Museum is pleased to host “In The World But Not Of It,” by Canadian artist Tim Smith. The documentary photography exhibit is based on a fourteen-year project where Smith took pictures of everyday life at local Hutterite colonies of southwestern Manitoba. The exhibit, on the museum’s second floor gallery, features 34 images. The artist will be available to speak with visitors. The exhibit will be on display until Aug. 26.

• July 20 — The Brandon Knights Chess Club are celebrating International Chess Day at the Daly House Museum from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Boards will be set up for anyone of any skill to come and play. Enjoy some tea from the BNRC Downtown Ambassadors while you play.

• July 20 — Poor Michael’s Emporium (322 Highway No. 10 at Onanole) will be hosting award-winning roots singer/songwriter poet Scott Nolan at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $25 (cash please). • July 21-23 — Salamander Summer Music Festival is taking place at Rideau Park. Party under the water tower with live music featuring DJs, local bands, university artists, performance troupes and more. Also on site will be a kids’ area, workshops and art installations; food trucks and beer gardens; vendor village. Weekend passes are $50 and available at salamandersummerfest.ca

• July 21-23 — The Manitoba Stampede and Exhibition takes place in Morris. This pro-rodeo event on the Canadian Tour circuit features top names in bull riding, bronco-busting, tie-down roping, bareback riding and steer wrestling. There will also be thoroughbred chariot, pony chariot and chuckwagon racing. Daily passes are $30 for ages 11 and up. For more information and schedule, visit manitobastampede.ca.

• July 22 — The Brandon Flight Centre’s annual Fly-in Breakfast returns! Come to the Brandon Flight Centre (425 Agnew Dr., Hangar 2) for pancakes, planes and plenty of fun from 8 to 11 a.m. Sightseeing flights will be on a first-come, first-served basis at a cost of $25 per person. Cost at the door: $12 for adults and $5 for children. Road Rebels display, Static displays and much more.

• July 22-23 — Brandon’s open garden tours take place over the weekend. Come and visit some of Brandon’s hidden garden gems.

• July 25 — The Virden Community Chamber of Commerce and Virden Agricultural Society will be hosting the RCMP Musical Ride at the fairgrounds to recognize the 150th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Gates open at 5 p.m.; entertainment at 5:30 p.m. and the ride will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 plus fees; children five and under are free. Tickets are available online at showpass.com/rcmp-musical-ride-virden or at Virden Hi-way Grocery and Flower Attic & Gifts. Rushed seating will begin at 5 p.m. and limited bleacher seating is available so you may want to bring your own lawn chair.

• July 27-30 — The 2023 Threshermen’s Reunion and Stampede takes place in Austin. Visit the 2023 International Cockshutt Club annual summer show, its first time in Western Canada. Featured concerts with Kendra Kay as well as Rosemary Siemens and Sweet Sound Revival. And come watch Canada’s best rodeo competitors go for the top prizes in bareback and saddle bronc riding, bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, mutton busting, barrel racing and much, much more. • Aug. 13 — Ladies Western Scramble takes place at the Wheat City golf course with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Deadline for registration is Aug. 7. This is a two-lady team event.
