THIRTY YEARS AGO

New construction will replace a hardware store, garage and liquor vendor that burned in a major fire last month. Wawanesa raised about $33,000 for the owners of the businesses and an employee who lost his job because of the fire, which destroyed a large chunk of the village’s business district.

Manitoba primary grade students will have a new approach in math class beginning this fall when a new provincial curriculum is introduced. The curriculum puts more emphasis on problem-solving along with learning the math basics.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Canada Post was left answering some uncomfortable security questions yesterday after a thief stole a Brandon mail truck loaded with more than 5,000 pieces of mail. The truck is believed to have been carrying about 5,000 letters, 40 parcels and 20 priority items bound for destinations along the Yellowhead Highway.

Fifteen combines turned out to help harvest Jeff McRae’s wheat field on his farm southwest of Brandon yesterday afternoon, along with nine trucks and four balers. About 30 farmers rallied together to assist the McRae family, since Jeff is in hospital for surgery to remove a brain tumour.

TEN YEARS AGO

Residents of Kingsway Kort trailer park are considering legal action after they were told to move out to make way for a Vancouver-based developer. More than 50 families currently living in the trailer court received a notice last week from Brandon Evergreen Developments that said it had purchased 11 acres in the south end of the city, including the park.

A solution to construct barriers over Brandon Regional Health Centre’s atrium balconies has been finalized, BRHC chief operating officer Brian Schoonbaert says. Plans to install permanent barriers on the third, fourth and fifth-floor balconies overlooking the atrium were made by the Brandon RHA in 2011, after two people died when they jumped from the fourth floor in separate incidents within seven months.
