There have been 4,000 visitors to the Pine Fort excavation just north of the Assiniboine River, at Spruce Woods. Two items have undoubtedly stirred some interest — a 1772 penny and a scale weight with an “X” scratched on one side.

City hall has sold, as of yesterday, 6,617 bicycle licences this year, about 300 more than last year at this time.

Sun staff writer Andy Moir is among 12 people selected for a nine-month fellowship at the World Press Institute of MacAlester College in St. Paul, Minn. Moir, 24, the only one of 55 Canadian applicants selected, will join others from the U.S., China, Russia, Hong Kong, France, Scotland and the African continent for training program for working journalists.

Thirty-five jobs are in jeopardy by the Royal Bank’s decision to call in $1.3 million in loans to Wescan Conveyor and Belting Ltd.

Bike licences are dead in Brandon. City council voted 4-2 last night to kill the money-losing metal plates that are costing more to enforce than they earn.

Popular Sun columnist Penny Ham died suddenly at her home today. She was 48. Her death comes days before the unveiling of her book, “A Celebration of Rural Manitoba.” She was a Sun columnist for nearly 20 years.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

With $2.6 million on its operators’ minds, the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum will come closer to looking like it did during the Second World War. By campaigning the public and private sector for funds to reconstruct and renovate buildings on the school’s original site, museum past-president Reg Forbes says they will include many interactive scenes.

The final hurdle toward building a 440,000-square-foot big box mall on 18th Street North and Kirkcaldy Drive was cleared last night, as council gave third and final reading to a bylaw that will rezone 10 acres of commercial property to make room for the shopping centre. Every councillor but Vince Barletta (Rosser) and Errol Black (Riverview) spoke in favour of the development.

TEN YEARS AGO

A 44-year-old Belmont man was airlifted to Winnipeg on Saturday morning after police say he ran a stop sign. RCMP say the car was going westbound on an unmarked gravel road near Belmont when he was T-boned by a northbound pickup truck on Calpoint Road just after 8 a.m. on Saturday. After emergency responders arrived at the scene, the driver of the car was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries. However, STARS Air Ambulance said he sustained “upper body injuries.”

Residents of Kingsway Kort are awaiting a formal eviction notice before moving ahead with any legal action. Residents held a meeting at the East End Community Centre on Thursday in an attempt to figure out their next step since they were told they have until March 2014 to leave the park after it was sold to a B.C.-based developer.
