Currently playing at the Capitol Theatre in Brandon is the movie “Elf” staring Will Ferrell and also a former Brandonite, although you might not know it. Glenn Surzyshyn is cast as Will Ferrell’s body double in the Ukrainian dancing scene in the seasonal movie. Surzyshyn has danced for Canada’s National Riding and Dancing Cossacks out of Dauphin and taught Ukrainian dancing for the Troyanda School of Dance in Brandon.

TEN YEARS AGO

Come Feb. 1, the RMs of Albert, Edward and Arthur will be merged into one municipality unless they come up with an alternate proposal that has all three parties involved in an amalgamation of one sort or another. A plan that had Albert and Arthur amalgamate was rejected by the department because it left Edward, the most southwesterly RM in the province, without a partner.

Manitobans will be able to see pharmacists for some of their health-care needs under a law that comes into effect in the new year. Health Minister Erin Selby says this will allow pharmacists to play a greater role in supporting the health and well-being of people while improving accountability and enhancing patient safety. Under the new act, pharmacists will be able to prescribe and administer certain drugs under limited conditions.

The Supreme Court of Canada started the clock ticking Friday for Parliament to reshape social policy dealing with the world’s oldest profession, as political battle lines were drawn. In a unanimous 9-0 ruling on Friday, the high court struck down the country’s prostitution laws, giving Parliament a year to produce new legislation. That means prostitution-related offences will remain in the Criminal Code for one more year.
